Chapter 3 - The Untouchable Asset

By 2:00 AM, my corporate lawyer, Marcus Vance, was sitting across from my kitchen island, sipping black coffee while reviewing a fresh batch of digital assets flashing on my laptop screen.
"The injunction went through cleanly, Claire," Marcus said, a slight smirk playing on his lips. "The moment you revoked the twelve-million-dollar guarantee at 11:59 PM, the bank's automated risk protocols triggered a total asset freeze on Sterling & Son Construction. Because the company was operating on your creditworthiness alone, its liabilities immediately outstripped its assets by millions."
"And the two million siphoned to Vanessa’s brother?" I asked.
"Traced, documented, and reported to the financial crimes division," Marcus replied, sliding a certified document toward me. "By morning, Daniel’s parents won't just lose their business—they’ll be facing corporate fraud charges for using shell companies to bleed their own firm dry while you footed the bill."

I looked out the window at the falling snow, feeling a profound sense of lightness. For six years, I had allowed myself to be gaslit into believing I was the "second-tier" wife, the outsider funding an inner circle that despised me. They thought my love for Daniel made me a permanent fixture of exploitation.
They were about to learn what happens when the foundation walks away.
