Chapter 5 - The Queen’s Gambit

Word of the collapse of Sterling & Son Construction spread through our elite social circle faster than a wildfire.
By noon, my phone was blowing up with frantic text messages and missed calls from my mother-in-law, Eleanor.
Eleanor: Claire, please pick up. This is a nightmare. Your father-in-law is in the hospital, and the sheriff is at the family home looking at foreclosure notices. How could you be so cold? Family is everything!
I didn’t reply. Instead, I forwarded her message directly to Marcus with a single note: Execute Phase Two.
Phase Two was the dissolution of the marital home. While Daniel thought our assets were intertwined, my prenuptial agreement—drafted meticulously by Marcus before we married—ensured that the luxury penthouse we lived in, my tech startup, and my personal liquid accounts were entirely firewalled from Daniel’s debts.
As far as the law was concerned, Daniel Sterling was a legally and financially ruined man who had entered our marriage with nothing and was about to leave it with even less.
At 3:00 PM, Vanessa tried a different tactic. She called me from an unknown number. When I answered, her voice dripped with venom.
"You think you’ve won, you arrogant bitch?" Vanessa hissed. "Daniel will never forgive you for destroying his family on Christmas! He’s coming back to me and Lily where he belongs!"

"Then keep him, Vanessa," I smiled into the phone. "Make sure you feed him, because he no longer has a house, a car, or a bank account to his name. Enjoy your new dependent."
I hung up and blocked the number permanently.
