Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of the Sterling Dynasty

Two days later, the local financial news broke a headline that shook the city: "Sterling & Son Construction Collapses Amid Allegations of Massive Financial Fraud."
Television crews camped outside the grand Sterling estate—the very house whose mortgage I had quietly paid for half a decade. Footage aired of sheriff’s deputies slapping seizure notices on the front gates.
Inside that house, the illusion of upper-class perfection had completely evaporated.
Daniel discovered the true depth of his family’s betrayal when the corporate audits revealed that his parents hadn't just stolen from the business to fund shell companies—they had used his name to take out secret personal loans, forging his signature on high-interest predatory notes to bail out Vanessa’s failed business ventures.
They hadn't just used me; they had used Daniel as a financial shield, sacrificing his future to protect their golden-child narrative with his ex-wife.
And now, the shield was shattered.
Daniel returned to the penthouse late that evening, only to find his key wouldn't turn in the lock. The smart-home security system had unlinked his profile.
He banged desperately on the heavy wooden door. "Claire! Open the door! Please! I have nowhere to go! My parents kicked me out because I couldn't fix the banks, and Vanessa threw me out the second she realized my credit was ruined!"

I unlocked the door and pulled it open just an inch, looking down at the broken man who had uninvited me from Christmas with a casual wave of his hand.
"You wanted a complete Christmas, Daniel," I said coldly. "Consider this your complete life."
