Chapter 7 - The Final Audit

January arrived with biting cold, but inside my office, the atmosphere was clinical and triumphant.
Divorce papers had been formally served to Daniel at a cheap motel downtown where he was crashing on a cot. Faced with absolute financial ruin and pending criminal conspiracy charges stemming from the corporate fraud investigation, Daniel’s defense attorney didn't even contest the filing. Not a single person came to visit them—not even Vanessa, who vanished the moment the bank accounts hit zero, taking little Lily with her back to her hometown out of state.
Marcus slid the final settlement document across my desk for my signature.
