Chapter 8 - The True Masterpiece

Six months later, the penthouse was entirely mine, remodeled from top to bottom. Every trace of Daniel’s existence—his clothes, his books, his heavy dark furniture—had been cleared out, replaced by bright modern art, sleek glass, and an atmosphere of absolute peace.
I was sitting on the balcony overlooking the city skyline, sipping a glass of chilled champagne as the warm summer breeze brushed against my face.
My tech startup had just closed a massive Series B funding round, valuing my company at over forty million dollars. My name was on the cover of Business Weekly under a feature article titled: The Architect of Her Own Empire.

It was an unknown number. Out of pure curiosity, I tapped the screen and listened to the voicemail.
Daniel’s voice sounded hollow, broken, and hollowed out by time and hard labor at a low-level warehouse job he had been forced to take.
"Claire... I saw the magazine article today. I... I just wanted to say I'm sorry. I was blind. I let them destroy everything we had. If there's any way we could talk..."
I didn't listen to the rest. I pressed Delete, blocked the number, and watched the digital file vanish into the ether.

I smiled, raised my glass to the sparkling city lights spread out beneath me, and whispered into the warm night air:
"Merry Christmas, Daniel. Enjoy the rest of your life."
