CHAPTER 1 — The Funeral That Buried More Than One Secret

The cemetery fell so quiet that even the rain seemed afraid to fall.
Eleanor Bennett didn't blink.
She stared at the birth certificate in my hand as though it were a loaded weapon pointed directly at her heart.
Ryan snatched the paper before his mother could react.
His eyes skimmed the page.
Then stopped.
His face lost every trace of color.
"That's impossible," he whispered.
"It can't be..."
I folded my arms across my chest, my newborn son sleeping peacefully against me in a soft gray carrier.
"Interesting."
"You didn't deny it."
Ryan looked toward Eleanor.
For the first time in years...
He looked genuinely frightened.
"Eleanor..."
"You told me this file was destroyed."
Silence.
Not one word.
Not one denial.
That silence answered every question I hadn't even known to ask.
I slowly stepped outside onto the porch and closed the door halfway behind me.
"No."
"You don't get to stand inside my home."
"You lost that privilege the moment you left me to give birth alone."
Rain began falling again.
Almost identical to the rain at Nathan's funeral.
Eleanor finally recovered.
Her face softened into practiced sadness.
"Olivia..."
"Nathan made mistakes."
"We all do."
"But today isn't about old wounds."
"It's about family."
I laughed.
It wasn't loud.
It wasn't angry.
It was the laugh of someone who had finally stopped believing lies.
"Family?"
"You mean the family that watched me collapse beside my husband's grave?"
"The family that told a woman in labor to call a taxi?"
"The family that never even asked if your grandson survived?"
Neither of them answered.
Instead...
Ryan quietly asked,
"Who else knows?"
There it was.
Not concern.
Not guilt.
Fear.
I smiled.
"The better question..."
"...is who doesn't."
Ryan's jaw tightened.
"You've shown this to someone."
"I didn't say that."
"But your face just confirmed exactly what I needed."
Eleanor stepped closer.
Her voice dropped.
"What do you want?"
I looked straight into her eyes.
"The truth."
"All of it."
She hesitated.
Then...
"The boy's mother blackmailed Nathan."
"He paid her."
"It ended years ago."
I shook my head.
"No."
"That isn't what scares you."
I held up the sealed letter Nathan had written before his death.
"I haven't opened this yet."
"But somehow..."
"...you already know what's inside."
For the first time...
Eleanor looked like she might faint.
Without another word...
She grabbed Ryan's arm.
"We're leaving."
As their black sedan disappeared through the gates...
I finally opened Nathan's letter.
The first sentence made my blood freeze.
Olivia... if my mother ever comes asking for our baby, never leave Gabriel alone with her.
Because Gabriel...
...is not the child she's really after.
That night...
Someone broke into my house.
Not to steal jewelry.
Not money.
Only one drawer had been opened.
Nathan's lockbox was gone.
Everything else remained untouched.
Except...
One thing.
The birth certificate.
Someone had searched the entire house...
But intentionally left that document behind.
May you like
As if they wanted me...
To keep asking questions.
