CHAPTER 3 — Nathan's Final Trap

Sleep became impossible.

Every creak of the house sounded like footsteps.

Every passing car made me check the nursery.

Every shadow felt alive.

At dawn...

I inserted Nathan's hard drive into my laptop.

It requested a password.

I tried our anniversary.

Nothing.

Gabriel's due date.

Nothing.

Then I remembered something Nathan always whispered before falling asleep.

"My greatest mistake."

I typed:

NOAH

The drive unlocked instantly.

Hundreds of encrypted files appeared.

Bank transfers.

Medical records.

Private surveillance footage.

And one folder labeled:

IF I DIE.

Hands trembling...

I opened the first video.

Nathan appeared exhausted.

His face was thinner than I remembered.

Dark circles surrounded his eyes.

If I was watching...

He was already dead.

"Olivia..."

"I'm sorry."

"I lied to you every day for seven years."

"I didn't betray you."

"I was protecting two children."

The screen switched to security footage.

A hospital nursery.

A newborn baby.

Then another.

Twins.

I froze.

Nathan's voice continued.

"The hospital made a mistake during a power outage."

"Two boys were born within minutes."

"One was ours."

"The other belonged to Marissa."

"Eleanor learned the truth before anyone else."

Another video appeared.

Eleanor speaking with a doctor.

A thick envelope full of cash changed hands.

Hospital records disappeared.

Bracelets were exchanged.

Babies were moved.

My breathing stopped.

Nathan continued.

"She believed the Bennett bloodline belonged with wealth."

"So she stole one baby..."

"...and erased the other."

Tears blurred my vision.

"Noah..."

"...and Gabriel..."

"...were born the same night."

"They are brothers."

"But not the way anyone believes."

Another file opened automatically.

DNA reports.

Highlighted in yellow.

I stared at the final sentence.

Then read it again.

Again.

Again.

My knees gave out beneath me.

Because the report proved one impossible truth.

Gabriel...

Wasn't Nathan's biological son.

Neither...

Was Noah.

I couldn't breathe.

If Nathan wasn't their father...

Then who was?

At that exact moment...

Someone knocked three times on my front door.

Slowly.

Calmly.

Almost politely.

I looked through the peephole.

An elderly man in a gray suit stood alone.

He held an old photograph.

When I opened the door...

He looked directly into my eyes.

"My name is Arthur Whitmore."

"I've spent thirty-five years searching for my grandsons."

He glanced toward baby Gabriel sleeping in his crib.

May you like

Then quietly said the words that shattered everything I thought I knew.

"They finally found you."
