CHAPTER 7 — The Boy Who Chose His Mother

The gunshot echoed through the museum like thunder.

For one endless second...

No one moved.

No one breathed.

Olivia dropped to the marble floor, instinctively covering her head.

Then she heard it.

A little boy crying.

Not screaming.

Crying.

"Mom..."

The voice was weak.

Terrified.

Alive.

"Noah!" Olivia shouted.

Emergency lights flickered on, bathing the museum in an eerie red glow.

Visitors had long gone home.

Only broken silence remained.

The masked man who had grabbed Noah was gone.

Eleanor stood frozen several yards away, staring into the darkness with genuine panic.

That was the first time Olivia realized something terrifying.

Eleanor hadn't planned the shooting.

Someone else had entered the game.

Two FBI agents burst through a side entrance.

"Federal agents! Nobody move!"

Agent Daniel Cross rushed toward Olivia.

"Are you hurt?"

"I'm fine!"

"The boy!"

Cross pointed toward a shattered glass display.

"There!"

Noah was crawling across the polished floor, clutching something tightly against his chest.

Olivia ran faster than she thought her exhausted body could move.

She dropped to her knees beside him.

The little boy looked up through tear-filled eyes.

For a moment...

Neither of them spoke.

His face...

His eyes...

The tiny dimple in his left cheek...

He looked exactly like the baby pictures Nathan had once shown her.

"You came," Noah whispered.

"I knew you'd come."

Olivia wrapped him in her arms.

She had never held him before.

Yet every instinct inside her screamed the same impossible truth.

This child belonged with her.

Noah buried his face against her shoulder.

"I was scared."

"I know."

"They told me you didn't want me."

Olivia felt her heart break.

"I never knew you existed."

The boy slowly pulled away.

Then he opened his tiny fist.

Nathan's wedding ring rested in his palm.

"He told me..."

"...if anything bad happened..."

"...I should give this to the only person he ever trusted."

Olivia's tears finally spilled over.

Nathan had been planning this.

Even in death...

He had been trying to protect them.

Across the gallery...

Eleanor suddenly screamed.

"Ryan!"

Everyone turned.

Ryan Bennett lay on the floor near one of the museum columns.

Blood spread across his expensive suit jacket.

The bullet had struck his shoulder.

He was alive.

Barely.

As paramedics rushed toward him, Ryan grabbed Agent Cross by the sleeve.

His lips trembled.

"It wasn't supposed..."

"...to happen like this."

Cross leaned closer.

"Who shot you?"

Ryan looked toward Eleanor.

For years she had controlled him with fear.

But fear changes when death is standing nearby.

With shaking hands...

He pointed directly at his own mother.

"She hired him."

The museum fell completely silent.

Eleanor's eyes widened.

"You idiot!"

Ryan coughed violently.

"I did everything you asked."

"I followed Nathan."

"I lied."

"I destroyed records."

"I kidnapped Noah."

"But you promised..."

"...nobody would die."

Olivia felt every word strike like lightning.

Kidnapped.

Noah had never been lost.

He had been stolen.

Ryan continued struggling to breathe.

"When Nathan found out..."

"...he threatened to expose everything."

"So..."

He looked at Eleanor with tears in his eyes.

"You poisoned him."

Olivia stopped breathing.

Agent Cross slowly stood.

"Eleanor Bennett..."

"You're under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder."

Two FBI agents stepped toward her.

For the first time in decades...

Eleanor Bennett looked frightened.

But then...

She smiled.

A calm...

Confident...

Almost victorious smile.

"You still don't understand."

Cross frowned.

"What?"

Eleanor laughed quietly.

"You think Nathan was my last secret?"

She reached into her handbag.

Every agent instantly drew their weapons.

"Don't move!"

Instead of a gun...

She removed a small silver key.

Then she looked directly at Olivia.

"Did Nathan ever tell you where Gabriel was born?"

Olivia's heartbeat stopped.

"The hospital."

"No."

Eleanor slowly shook her head.

"He was born at Whitmore Women's Clinic."

"But that's not where he stayed."

Olivia stared at her.

"What are you talking about?"

Eleanor's smile widened.

"The hospital fire."

"The evacuation."

"The missing nursery records."

"You've spent weeks looking for one stolen child."

She paused just long enough for everyone to lean closer.

"When you should have been asking..."

"...how many babies disappeared that night."

The entire room froze.

Agent Cross lowered his weapon slightly.

"What do you mean?"

Eleanor looked almost proud.

"There weren't two babies switched."

"There were five."

Olivia felt the world spin beneath her feet.

Five.

Five innocent newborns.

Five families.

Five lives rewritten forever.

Noah tightened his grip around Olivia's hand.

His tiny voice trembled.

"Mom..."

"Does that mean..."

"...someone else is looking for me too?"

Before Olivia could answer...

A loud explosion shook the museum.

Every light went out.

Glass shattered across the floor.

Smoke filled the galleries.

Someone had detonated a diversion device outside.

As agents rushed toward the exits...

A black SUV sped away into the night.

Inside...

A shadowy figure watched the museum disappear in the rearview mirror.

He held a worn family photograph.

Five newborn babies.

Five identification bracelets.

One was circled in red ink.

The man smiled.

"So..."

"They finally found the first one."

He folded the photograph and whispered into his phone.

"Begin Phase Two."

Then the call disconnected.

And Olivia had no idea...

That the real mastermind behind Nathan's death had just revealed himself.
