CHAPTER 4 — The Man Who Was Never Supposed to Return

Olivia didn't invite Arthur Whitmore inside.

She kept one hand on the door.

The other rested protectively on Gabriel's crib.

"You have exactly one minute."

Arthur nodded as though he had expected nothing more.

"I've spent thirty-five years exposing financial fraud," he said quietly. "I know what guilty people look like."

He glanced toward the street.

"And your mother-in-law has looked guilty every time I've seen her."

Olivia's pulse quickened.

"You know Eleanor?"

Arthur's expression hardened.

"I used to."

"Before she stole everything from my family."

The sentence landed like a hammer.

Arthur reached into his briefcase and carefully removed an old photograph.

Two young couples stood smiling outside a hospital.

Nathan's parents.

And another wealthy couple Olivia had never seen.

Arthur pointed to the man beside Eleanor.

"My son."

Olivia frowned.

"That's not Nathan's father."

"No."

Arthur looked directly into her eyes.

"That's because Richard Bennett was never Nathan's biological father."

Everything inside Olivia froze.

Arthur continued.

"Thirty-five years ago Eleanor had an affair."

"My son believed Nathan was his child."

"But Eleanor disappeared before he ever learned the truth."

Olivia stared at the photograph.

Nathan...

Had spent his entire life believing the wrong man had raised him.

Arthur opened another folder.

Inside were DNA reports.

Hospital records.

Private investigator notes.

"I hired investigators after my son disappeared."

"They found one thing before they died."

He handed Olivia a faded document.

Across the top...

CONFIDENTIAL ADOPTION TRANSFER.

One signature belonged to Eleanor Bennett.

The other...

Belonged to the chief doctor from the same hospital where Gabriel and Noah had been born.

Olivia whispered,

"This has been happening for decades."

Arthur nodded.

"Eleanor doesn't just steal money."

"She steals bloodlines."

That evening...

Olivia finally watched the second video Nathan had hidden.

Nathan looked exhausted.

His voice shook.

"If you're seeing this..."

"...I'm running out of time."

"I found proof Mother switched babies years ago."

"I confronted her."

"She smiled."

"Then she told me something I'll never forget."

Nathan swallowed hard.

"'Family isn't born,' she said."

"'Family is chosen by whoever controls the paperwork.'"

Nathan leaned closer to the camera.

"If anything happens to me..."

"...never trust the death certificate."

The video ended abruptly.

Olivia's phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

A little boy whispered.

"Is this Olivia?"

Her heart stopped.

"Who's speaking?"

"My name is Noah."

"They said you're my daddy's wife."

"They said you forgot about me."

Before Olivia could answer...

The phone went dead.

The call lasted only twenty-three seconds.

But it changed everything.

Noah was alive.

And someone was letting him reach out...

On purpose.

May you like

Not for help.

As bait.
