Chapter 4 - THE COLLAPSE OF AN EMPIREBack in the kitchen of Daniela and Rodrigo's home, the atmosphere was suffocating.

Rodrigo sat with his head buried in his hands, dry sobs racking his broad shoulders. The heavy weight of his blind loyalty had finally crushed him. For years, he had defended his mother's emotional abuse, gaslighted his wife, and dismissed every red flag because he was terrified of falling out of favor with the woman who held the family purse strings.
"I didn't know, Daniela," Rodrigo choked out, his voice cracking painfully. "I swear to God, I had no idea. She... she always bought the best things for the family. She said imported formulas were superior. I trusted her..."
Daniela stood by the window, watching the distant headlights of police cruisers flashing against the clouds. Her heart was no longer racing with fear; it was hardened by a fierce, protective maternal instinct.
"You didn't want to know, Rodrigo," Daniela corrected him gently, but without an ounce of warmth. "Every time she insulted me, every time she undermined my parenting, every time you threatened me to keep the peace... you chose her comfort over our son's safety."
He flinched as if struck by a physical blow. He stood up, stumbling toward her, his hands outstretched in desperate plea. "We need to leave. We need to pack our bags, take Mateo, and run before her associates find out we're tied to this. They're dangerous people, Daniela! My father’s death... the official report said it was a heart attack, but..."
He stopped, his eyes widening as a dark, long-buried memory surfaced.
"What about your father?" Daniela demanded, turning to face him fully.
"Two years ago... before he tried to rewrite the corporate shares to cut my mother out of the board," Rodrigo whispered, horror washing over his pale face. "He had a sudden, violent illness. Severe neurological shutdown. The doctors couldn't find a toxin, but his blood panels showed heavy concentrations of... of unregulated animal tranquilizers."
The pieces clicked together in Daniela's mind with chilling precision. Teresa Villaseñor wasn't just an overbearing socialite; she was a cold, calculated predator who ruled her dynasty through chemical control and elimination.
Suddenly, Daniela’s phone buzzed again. It wasn't the police this time.
It was an unknown international number.
She slid her finger across the screen and hit speakerphone.

"Mrs. Márquez," a smooth, chillingly polite voice spoke in heavily accented English. "I am calling on behalf of the export collective in Bucharest. It appears our latest shipment of six premium cans was delivered to your residence instead of the Zapopan veterinary clinic. We strongly advise you to return them untouched... unless you wish for your lovely baby boy to experience a very sudden, permanent sleep."
The call disconnected with a sharp click.
