Chapter 7 - The Gathering StormWithin two hours, the grand drawing room of the Marino estate looked like a military war room.

Maps of the city’s underground transit lines, shipping manifests, and digital schematics of the Vanguard Syndicate’s primary financial hubs were projected across the massive smart-glass tables. Armed security operatives moved in silent, synchronized efficiency, securing perimeter checkpoints while tactical teams geared up in the courtyard below.

I sat at the head of the long mahogany table. I wasn't in my wheelchair anymore; I sat in a high-backed leather armchair, my legs stretched out, an ice pack resting against my aching knees while my body adjusted to the shock of movement.

Standing near the double doors were Lily and Leo, clutching mugs of hot chocolate provided by the estate's head chef. Lily had changed out of her muddy hoodie into a clean sweater, but she still clutched Audrey’s silver necklace in her small palm like a talisman.

She looked over at me, her hazel eyes cautious. "Are you really the Harbor King?" she asked, her voice cutting through the tense murmurs of my tactical commanders.

I looked up from the tactical map, softening my expression just enough so I wouldn't frighten her. I motioned with my hand. "Come here, Lily."

She hesitated for a second, then walked over, her sneakers clicking softly against the marble floor. She stopped right beside my chair, looking down at my legs with intense curiosity.

"Does it still hurt?" she whispered.

"Like hell," I answered honestly, offering a faint, weary smile. "But it's a good kind of hurt. It means I can finally protect what's mine."

She reached out and touched my sleeve. "Julian said bad men were coming. Are they going to hurt us?"

"Nobody is ever going to touch you again," I said, my voice dropping into a register so fierce and absolute that even Leo, standing a few feet away, swallowed hard and nodded in agreement. "Not Julian. Not the Syndicate. Nobody."

Before Lily could reply, Marcus stepped into the room, holding a secure encrypted tablet.

"Mr. Marino, we've decrypted the drive we recovered from Evelyn's sniper asset," Marcus reported, his face grim. "It contains the complete roster of the Vanguard Syndicate’s leadership council—including the municipal judge who signed off on Audrey’s forged death certificate, and the sitting mayor who has been laundering their offshore accounts through city infrastructure projects."

I looked down at the tablet screen. Names, faces, bank accounts, and addresses scrolled past in glowing green text. It was a roadmap to the corruption that had poisoned my city while I was trapped in the dark.

"Where is the council meeting tonight?" I asked, my voice as cold as winter steel.

"Downtown," Marcus replied. "At the Zenith Tower penthouse. A private gala celebrating the city's new port expansion project—funded entirely by Vanguard capital."

I stood up slowly, gripping the edge of the mahogany table. My knees protested, sending a jolt of pain up my spine, but I ignored it. I planted both feet firmly on the ground and squared my shoulders.

"Get the transport ready," I commanded, looking around the room at my captains and commanders. "We're crashing the party."
