Chapter 3 - BEHIND BARS AND SWEATING BULLETThe fluorescent lights of the maximum-security holding facility hummed a harsh, irritating tune. Inside holding cell 4B, Ethan Sterling sat huddled on a steel bench, his designer suit wrinkled, his hair matted with sweat. The arrogant billionaire heir who had lorded over Manhattan elite circles just twenty-four hours ago was completely gone.

The heavy steel door rattled, and a prison guard unlocked it, shoving a disheveled figure inside before slamming it shut.

Ethan looked up, his eyes widening in horror. "Dad? Julian? What are you guys doing here? Did your lawyers get me out? Where's our legal team?!"

Arthur Sterling looked ten years older than he had yesterday. His tailored suit was rumpled, his tie loosened, and his eyes were bloodshot. He walked slowly across the concrete floor and stopped right in front of Ethan.

Smack!

The sharp sound of a vicious backhand echoed off the concrete walls. Ethan stumbled off the bench, crashing hard onto the floor, clutching his stinging cheek in utter shock.

"Dad! What did you do that for?!" Ethan screamed.

"You arrogant, brainless, worthless maggot!" Arthur screamed back, his voice cracking with rage and absolute despair. "Because of your psychotic obsession with abusing your wife, our entire empire is gone! Everything! Gone!"

"What are you talking about?" Ethan whimpered, scrambling backward. "It's just a divorce! We have offshore accounts, we have shell companies in the Caymans—"

"Frozen!" Julian yelled, kicking the steel bench in frustration. "Every single account! The SEC, the FBI, and the Department of Defense locked down every cent we own within three hours of your little stunt last night! Dad's bank accounts, my trust funds, your personal stashes—all seized under emergency national security provisions!"

Ethan’s jaw went slack. "National security? How... how can an admiral do that? He's just a retired military officer!"

"Just a retired military officer?" Arthur let out a bitter, hysterical laugh. "You absolute fool! Do you have any idea who Jonathan Vance actually is before he put on that dress uniform? Do you know what circles he moves in?"

Ethan shook his head frantically. "He... he was just head of naval operations..."

"He was the primary architect of joint cyber-defense and maritime intelligence operations for the entire Western Hemisphere," Arthur whispered, terror creeping back into his voice. "He has personal loyalty from every top general in the Pentagon, every director in the intelligence community, and half the congressional defense committee. He didn't just use law enforcement—he deployed an entire geopolitical network just to wipe us off the map because you laid a hand on his daughter."

Just then, the heavy steel door clanked again. A prison guard stepped in, flanked by two federal marshals holding a thick stack of legal documents.

"Inmate Sterling, Ethan," the marshal called out coldly. "You have formal indictments added to your file. Aggravated domestic assault, felony coercion, extortion, and interstate stalking. Bail is denied. Your arraignment is scheduled for tomorrow morning."

Ethan grabbed the bars of the cell, shaking them in sheer panic. "No! No, wait! Let me make a phone call! I want to speak to my lawyer! I have rights!"

"Your rights were revoked the moment you threatened an officer's family," the marshal replied flatly, turning on his heel and walking away, leaving the Sterlings engulfed in the chilling reality of their total ruin.
