Chapter 6 - THE FINAL HAMMERFALLThe courtroom fell into a pin-drop silence so absolute that the hum of the overhead air conditioning sounded like a distant jet engine.

Judge Eleanor Vance leaned forward, resting her hands on the bench as she prepared to deliver the final verdict.

"Ethan Sterling," the judge spoke, every syllable ringing like a death knell. "On the count of aggravated domestic assault resulting in severe bodily endangerment, this court sentences you to twenty-five years in federal prison without the possibility of parole."

Ethan gasped, his knees buckling beneath him. He grabbed the edge of the defense table to keep from collapsing, his face turning ghostly white. "No... twenty-five years? Please! Your Honor, have mercy! My family—!"

"On the counts of corporate racketeering, extortion, and financial fraud," Judge Vance continued, raising her voice over Ethan's pathetic whimpering, "you are sentenced to an additional fifteen consecutive years, to be served at the federal maximum-security penitentiary in Florence, Colorado."

Bang!

The gavel struck the wood with deafening finality.

"Court is adjourned," Judge Vance announced, standing up and sweeping back into her chambers.

Instantly, two federal marshals stepped forward, grabbing Ethan by his arms. Ethan wailed hysterically, thrashing against their iron grip as they hauled him backward away from the podium.

"Rachel! Rachel, please! Save me! Don't let them take me!" Ethan screamed, tears streaming down his face as he locked eyes with his ex-wife. "I'm sorry! I'm sorry! Please!"

Rachel didn't flinch. She didn't look away with pity or anger. She simply looked at him with profound, icy indifference, the way one might look at a speck of dust swept off a clean floor.

As the marshals dragged Ethan through the heavy oak doors, his desperate cries faded down the echoing marble hallway until they were completely gone.

In the gallery, Arthur and Julian Sterling sat frozen, their own sentencing hearing scheduled for the afternoon, knowing full well they would join Ethan behind bars for the rest of their natural lives. The mighty Sterling dynasty had collapsed into dust, erased from the annals of high society in less than four months.

Rachel stood up smoothly from the table, adjusting her blazer. She turned around and walked up the aisle toward the front row where her father was waiting.

Admiral Jonathan Vance stood up to meet her. The terrifying, ruthless military commander of the first chapter was gone; in his place stood a proud, deeply loving father. He opened his arms, and Rachel stepped right into his embrace, burying her face against his shoulder.

"It’s over, Dad," Rachel whispered, a tear of pure relief slipping down her cheek.

"It’s not just over, sweetheart," Jonathan murmured, kissing the top of her head as he held her tight. "It’s a brand new beginning."
