Chapter 5 - THE TRIAL OF THE CENTURYThree months later, the Southern District Federal Courtroom was packed to absolute capacity. Media outlets from around the globe fought for seats inside the oak-paneled gallery, flashes of cameras illuminating the marble corridors outside. This wasn't just a high-profile divorce or a messy domestic abuse case—it was the spectacular, public execution of one of America's most powerful corporate dynasties.

At the defense table sat Ethan Sterling. Gone was the arrogant, impeccably groomed billionaire heir. In his place sat a hollowed-out, pale inmate in a gray jumpsuit, his hair unwashed, his eyes sunken from months of isolation and relentless legal pounding. Next to him, his court-appointed defense attorney looked hopelessly overwhelmed, thumbing frantically through a mountain of federal indictments.
Across the aisle sat Rachel Vance-Sterling, radiant in a sharp, elegant white pantsuit, flanked by her high-powered legal counsel. In the front row of the gallery sat Admiral Jonathan Vance, his arms crossed over his chest, his presence commanding absolute silence in the courtroom.
"All rise for the Honorable Judge Eleanor Vance—no relation to the plaintiff, though possessing equal steel," the bailiff announced loudly.
Judge Vance stepped onto the dais, her expression stern as she adjusted her glasses and scanned the courtroom. "Be seated. We are here today to hear closing arguments in the consolidated federal and civil proceedings of Vance-Sterling v. Sterling and The United States v. Sterling Global Logistics."
Judge Vance looked directly down at Ethan. "Mr. Sterling, your legal team has attempted to characterize your actions as a routine marital dispute blown out of proportion. How do you plead to the amended federal charges of domestic terrorism-adjacent financial racketeering, aggravated assault, and systematic witness intimidation?"
Ethan swallowed hard, his voice trembling as he stood up. "Your Honor... I... I was provoked. Rachel—"
"Save it, Mr. Sterling," Judge Vance interrupted sharply, her gavel coming down with a decisive crack. "This court has reviewed over two thousand pages of encrypted text messages, audio recordings, medical records, and financial wire transfers demonstrating a multi-year pattern of physical abuse, psychological torture, and financial coercion."
The judge picked up a thick stack of documents.
"Furthermore, the federal investigations into Sterling Global Enterprises have uncovered systemic money laundering and illegal offshore accounts used to finance illicit operations—operations that your father and brother orchestrated, but which you actively participated in."
The gallery erupted into whispers. Arthur and Julian Sterling, seated in the back row of the defendant holding area, hung their heads in utter defeat. Their empire was gone; their accounts were liquidated; their friends in high places had vanished like smoke.
"Mr. Sterling," Judge Vance continued, her voice echoing coldly through the courtroom. "You operated under the delusion that your wealth and family name placed you above the law. You believed that even when confronted with violence, your victims had no recourse."

Judge Vance paused, locking eyes with Ethan.
"You were catastrophically wrong."
