Chapter 1 – The Man Everyone Wanted Gone

Monday morning at Sterling Global Headquarters was supposed to begin like every other day—executives rushing through the marble lobby, assistants balancing coffee cups, and security making sure no one "out of place" entered the building.

Then the old man walked in.

His gray jacket was faded from years of wear. His shoes looked as if they had survived a hundred winters. His hands trembled as he leaned on a worn wooden cane, carrying nothing except a yellow envelope tucked carefully beneath his arm.

Conversations stopped.

Some employees instinctively stepped away, assuming he was homeless.

The receptionist frowned.

"Sir, this building is for employees and scheduled guests only."

The old man smiled politely.

"I've come to see Ms. Evelyn Carter."

The receptionist nearly laughed.

"The CEO?"

"Yes."

"Do you have an appointment?"

"No."

"I'm afraid that's impossible."

People nearby began whispering.

"Another crazy old guy."

"Probably looking for money."

"He doesn't even know how corporations work."

Security approached.

"Sir, we're going to have to ask you to leave."

The old man didn't argue.

Instead, he gently placed both hands on the marble reception desk.

"I've waited forty-two years for this meeting."

The sentence made everyone pause.

Forty-two years?

Before anyone could respond, the elevator doors opened.

Out stepped Victoria Hale, Sterling Global's ruthless Chief Operating Officer.

She hated delays.

Her sharp eyes immediately landed on the old man.

"What is going on here?"

The receptionist answered proudly.

"This man keeps insisting he has business with Ms. Carter."

Victoria looked him up and down with visible disgust.

"This isn't a charity shelter."

"You've embarrassed our clients enough."

She pointed toward the revolving doors.

"Throw him out."

Two security guards grabbed the old man's arms.

Employees watched with amusement.

Someone even recorded the scene on a phone.

As the guards dragged him away, the old man quietly spoke.

"I only wanted to return something that belongs to her."

Victoria rolled her eyes.

"If it's another fake inheritance story, save it."

The old man slowly reached inside his jacket.

Security instantly became tense.

Hands moved toward their radios.

But instead of a weapon...

...he carefully pulled out the old yellow envelope.

Across the front, written in faded blue ink, were only six words.

"For Evelyn... if I'm too late."

The smile disappeared from Victoria's face.

May you like

She had seen Evelyn stare at those exact six words once before...

...on a photograph hidden inside the CEO's private office.
