Chapter 4 – The Room Behind the Wall

Evelyn canceled every meeting.
With the old man beside her, she went straight to the abandoned records floor beneath the building.
Victoria was forced to follow under security watch.
The rusted key fit a door no one had opened in forty years.
Behind it was not a storage room.
It was a hidden office.
Dust covered everything.
Old files.
Broken typewriters.
A portrait of Evelyn’s father.
And on the desk…
a tape recorder.
The old man pressed play.
A man’s voice filled the room.
Evelyn instantly covered her mouth.
It was her father.
“If my daughter ever hears this, tell her I never left her. Tell her I fought until my last breath.”
Then the recording changed.
Another voice appeared.
Victoria’s.
Much younger.
Much colder.
“Sign the transfer papers, Mr. Carter, or Evelyn disappears next.”
Evelyn turned slowly.
Victoria backed away.
“I was young… I had no choice…”
The old man opened the final folder.
Inside was the original contract proving Evelyn’s father had been the true owner.
But underneath it was a second document.
A prison death certificate.
Evelyn’s father had died only three months ago.
Not forty years ago.
Evelyn whispered, “He was alive all this time…”
The old man nodded with tears in his eyes.
“And before he died, he made me promise one thing.”
“What?”
“To bring you the truth…”
He paused.
“And to tell you I am not just his friend.”
Evelyn looked up.
May you like
The old man’s voice trembled.
“I’m your uncle.”
