Chapter 7 – The Man at the Harbor

The report shook Evelyn to her core.

Richard Carter… alive.

For forty-two years she had mourned a father she believed was dead.

Now someone was telling her he had never stopped breathing.

The report contained only one clue:

Pier 17. Midnight. Come alone.

Every instinct told Evelyn it was a trap.

But every beat of her heart screamed that her father might be waiting.

Ignoring the warnings of federal agents, she slipped away that night.

Fog rolled across the deserted harbor.

Old cargo ships creaked against the docks.

Then she saw him.

An elderly man stood at the edge of the pier, wearing a long black coat and a weathered cap.

His back faced her.

"Evelyn?"

His voice was weak.

She froze.

That voice...

She had heard it every night in her dreams since childhood.

"Dad?"

The man slowly turned.

Tears flooded Evelyn's eyes.

It was him.

Older.

Thinner.

Scarred.

But unmistakably Richard Carter.

Before she could run into his arms—

BOOM!

A black SUV smashed through the dock gate.

Masked gunmen jumped out, firing automatic weapons.

Richard shoved Evelyn behind a steel container.

"Stay down!"

The old man who had spent decades in hiding suddenly fought like a trained soldier.

He disarmed one attacker with unbelievable speed.

Another pulled a knife.

Richard blocked it, but the blade sliced deep across his shoulder.

More vehicles arrived.

Too many.

Richard grabbed Evelyn's hand.

"There's no time."

"They're not after me anymore."

"They're after what you inherited."

He handed her a tiny silver flash drive.

"Everything you need is on this."

"The names."

"The money."

"The politicians."

"The murders."

"The people who really own the shadows."

Before Evelyn could ask another question...

A helicopter appeared overhead.

A spotlight locked onto them.

A voice thundered through loudspeakers.

"Richard Carter!"

"Return the drive!"

"Or your daughter dies tonight!"

Richard looked at Evelyn with heartbreaking sadness.

Then he whispered,

May you like

"I've only lied to you once..."

"...I'm not the real target."
