CHAPTER 1 — THE WOMAN EVERYONE THOUGHT HAD BEEN ABANDONED

The snow had already begun falling when Joanna Hayes stepped through the automatic doors of Mercy Creek Medical Center.
She carried only two things.
A faded blue suitcase.
And the tiny heartbeat growing beneath her oversized coat.
Nobody walked beside her.
Nobody held her hand.
No husband.
No parents.
No friends.
Only silence.
The receptionist smiled politely.
"First baby?"
Joanna nodded.
"Your emergency contact?"
She hesitated.
"...No one."
The receptionist looked uncomfortable.
"What about the baby's father?"
Joanna forced a smile that almost looked convincing.
"He'll be here."
She knew he wouldn't.
Logan Wright hadn't answered a single phone call in seven months.
The night she showed him the ultrasound, he stared at the tiny black-and-white image for nearly a minute.
Then he quietly said,
"I can't do this."
No explanation.
No goodbye kiss.
Just a suitcase disappearing through the apartment door.
By sunrise...
He was gone.
His phone disconnected.
His social media deleted.
His apartment emptied.
It was as if he had erased himself from the world.
For weeks Joanna searched everywhere.
His friends.
His coworkers.
His favorite fishing lake.
Nothing.
Eventually she stopped asking questions.
Not because she had answers...
But because she was too exhausted to keep hoping.
She rented the cheapest room she could find above an old diner.
The owner, Mrs. Ramirez, noticed Joanna's swollen stomach immediately.
"You have family?"
Joanna smiled weakly.
"I will."
That answer stayed with the old woman.
Every morning before sunrise Joanna cleaned tables.
Every afternoon she served coffee.
Every night she counted tips inside a cracked ceramic mug labeled DREAMS.
One dollar.
Five dollars.
Sometimes twenty.
Every penny went into diapers, baby clothes, and a tiny secondhand crib she bought from a church sale.
She never bought anything for herself.
One rainy evening another waitress asked,
"Don't you hate him?"
Joanna looked through the restaurant window.
"No."
"You don't?"
"I hate that my son will never know the good parts of his father."
She rubbed her stomach gently.
"But he'll know love."
The women working beside her quietly wiped away tears.
Months passed.
The baby grew stronger.
Joanna grew thinner.
Still...
She never missed work.
Until Tuesday morning.
The contractions started while pouring coffee.
The mug shattered against the floor.
Pain shot through her body.
Mrs. Ramirez rushed toward her.
"It's time."
Forty minutes later an ambulance pulled into Mercy Creek Medical.
Labor lasted twelve endless hours.
Joanna screamed until her voice disappeared.
She squeezed nurses' hands.
She begged God not for herself...
Only for the baby.
"Please...
Just let him live."
Finally...
At exactly 3:17 PM...
A tiny cry echoed through the delivery room.
The loudest...
Most beautiful sound Joanna had ever heard.
"It's a boy."
The nurses laughed.
Joanna sobbed.
"Can I hold him?"
Before anyone answered...
The delivery room door opened.
Dr. Robert Wright walked inside.
Head of Obstetrics.
Forty years of experience.
A man famous for remaining calm during impossible deliveries.
He glanced toward the newborn.
Then everything changed.
His clipboard slipped from his hands.
His breathing stopped.
His knees nearly gave out beneath him.
The tiny baby had a crescent-shaped birthmark behind his left ear.
Exactly like...
Someone Robert had buried with his own hands twenty-six years ago.
He whispered so quietly nobody else heard.
"No...
May you like
That's impossible..."
Then tears began rolling down the doctor's face.
