CHAPTER 4 — THE WOMAN WHO STOLE A BABY WAS STILL ALIVE

For the first time in twenty-six years, Robert Wright allowed himself to believe that the nightmare was finally over.

He was wrong.

Because while Logan was slowly rebuilding his relationship with Joanna and learning how to hold his newborn son, someone else was watching them.

From the parking lot across the street.

An elderly woman wearing dark sunglasses lowered a pair of binoculars.

Her wrinkled hands trembled.

Not from age.

From fear.

She whispered to herself.

"They found him..."

She immediately made a phone call.

"We have a problem."

Meanwhile, Robert refused to let the past remain buried. He reopened every file connected to the accident that had supposedly killed his wife and infant son.

Boxes of yellowed police reports filled his office.

Most of them repeated the same conclusion.

Fatal crash.

Body of Claire Wright recovered.

Infant presumed drowned.

Case closed.

But one page had been ignored for decades.

A handwritten note from a rookie officer.

"Hospital volunteer Margaret Collins disappeared the same day as the accident. Never located."

Robert stared at the name.

Margaret Collins.

The investigators quickly pulled old photographs.

The moment Logan saw one, his face drained of color.

"...That's her."

Joanna looked confused.

"You know this woman?"

Logan nodded slowly.

"My mother."

Silence swallowed the room.

"She raised me."

Robert felt the air leave his lungs.

"You mean... the woman who raised you was working at the hospital the day you disappeared?"

Logan's voice cracked.

"I never knew."

That evening, detectives searched Margaret Collins' abandoned farmhouse outside Asheville.

The house looked untouched for years.

Dust covered every window.

The bedrooms were empty.

But hidden beneath loose floorboards in the attic...

They found dozens of old newspaper clippings.

Every article was about Robert Wright.

His medical career.

His family.

The accident.

There were also hundreds of photographs.

Some showed little Logan playing in the yard.

Others showed Robert from a distance.

Walking into the hospital.

Leaving church.

Standing beside Claire's grave.

Margaret had watched him for years.

She had never truly disappeared.

She had been hiding in plain sight.

Then detectives found the final item.

A locked wooden chest.

Inside lay dozens of letters.

One was addressed simply:

"For Logan... when the truth finally catches me."
