CHAPTER 10 ā THE LETTER THAT EXPOSED THE TRUE MASTERMIND

The courtroom emptied.
Reporters chased headlines.
Television cameras packed away.
But not a single member of the Wright family moved.
Daniel's final words echoed inside every mind.
"I wasn't the one at the top."
Robert sat motionless on the wooden courtroom bench.
For twenty-six years, he had believed the nightmare ended with his brother.
Now he realized Daniel had only been another piece on someone else's chessboard.
Detective Samuel Brooks broke the silence.
"We're reopening everything."
"The crash."
"The kidnapping."
"The hospital attack."
"Everything."
Three days later, Brooks received an unexpected call from the state prison.
Daniel Wright had requested a private meeting.
"There are conditions," the prison warden warned.
"He says he'll only speak to Robert Wright... and Logan."
Robert agreed immediately.
Inside the maximum-security prison, Daniel looked nothing like the powerful businessman who had once smiled from magazine covers.
The expensive suits were gone.
The polished confidence had vanished.
Dark circles hung beneath his eyes.
For the first time...
He looked afraid.
He folded his hands together.
"I don't have much time."
Robert stared at him without emotion.
"You've lied your entire life."
"Why should we believe you now?"
Daniel slowly slid a sealed envelope across the table.
"I never wanted Claire dead."
Robert slammed his fist onto the metal table.
"Don't you dare say her name!"
"I arranged the fake accident..." Daniel whispered, his voice shaking. "I wanted you ruined financially... not widowed."
The room fell silent.
Logan frowned.
"What are you talking about?"
Daniel looked toward the prison surveillance camera before lowering his voice.
"I borrowed money from a private investment syndicate."
"They weren't businessmen."
"They controlled judges... police... politicians."
"When I couldn't repay them, they gave me one choice."
"Destroy Robert Wright."
"They wanted Mercy Creek Medical."
Robert's face hardened.
"The hospital?"
Daniel nodded.
"It wasn't just a hospital."
"Beneath it was land worth billions."
"There were plans to build the largest biotechnology research center in the country."
Robert had never known.
Years earlier, he had refused several offers to sell the property because Claire loved serving the local community.
That decision had unknowingly placed a target on his family.
Daniel swallowed hard.
"I thought they only wanted you bankrupt."
"But after Claire discovered the financial fraud..."
"They decided no witnesses could remain."
Logan leaned forward.
"Who are 'they'?"
Daniel closed his eyes.
"I never knew his real name."
"I only knew everyone called him..."
The Chairman.
Before Robert could ask another questionā
Prison alarms suddenly erupted.
Red emergency lights flashed across the corridor.
Guards shouted outside.
A corrections officer burst through the door.
"Everyone get down!"
A deafening explosion shook the prison.
The lights went out.
Smoke poured through the ventilation system.
Someone had detonated explosives near the prison's power station.
Automatic cell doors malfunctioned throughout the facility.
Prisoners screamed.
Gunfire echoed from another wing.
Detective Brooks immediately drew his weapon.
"This wasn't an escape..."
"They're coming for Daniel."
Daniel's terrified expression confirmed it.
"They always clean up loose ends."
The interview room door exploded inward.
Masked gunmen stormed inside.
Bullets shattered concrete walls.
Brooks fired back.
Robert pulled Logan behind an overturned table.
Daniel froze.
One assassin ignored everyone else and walked straight toward him.
Without saying a wordā
He fired a single shot.
Daniel collapsed instantly.
The gunman turned to leave.
But before dying, Daniel grabbed Robert's sleeve with blood-covered fingers.
His lips barely moved.
"Locker..."
"...317..."
"...Claire..."
Then he took his final breath.
The assassins escaped before backup arrived.
Hours later, investigators searched Daniel's prison belongings.
Nothing.
No documents.
No evidence.
Only the mysterious final clue.
Locker 317.
The next morning, Robert, Logan, Joanna, and Detective Brooks traveled to an abandoned downtown train station scheduled for demolition.
Hidden in the basement was a forgotten row of old storage lockers.
Most were rusted shut.
Until they reached one marked:
317.
Brooks cut the lock.
The metal door creaked open.
Inside sat a dusty leather briefcase wrapped in a faded blue blanket.
Robert recognized the blanket immediately.
Claire had knitted it while she was pregnant with Ethan.
His hands trembled as he opened the briefcase.
Inside were dozens of documents...
Bank transfers.
Photographs.
Secret contracts.
And at the very bottom...
A sealed letter addressed in Claire's handwriting.
Robert could barely breathe.
He opened it carefully.
The first line made everyone freeze.
"If you are reading this, then I was murdered by someone I once trusted."
Joanna covered her mouth.
Logan looked at Robert.
Brooks slowly reached for the next page.
Then all four of them saw the name Claire had written.
Not Daniel.
Not The Chairman.
But someone none of them had ever suspected.
Someone who was still walking free...
Someone who had attended Logan and Joanna's baby's birth...
Dr. Emily Carter.
The same obstetrician who had quietly assisted during the delivery...
The same doctor who had smiled while holding the newborn...
And the same woman who had mysteriously disappeared from Mercy Creek Medical the morning after the hospital shooting.
Robert's heartbeat thundered in his ears.
He whispered only four words.
May you like
"She knew all along."
