CHAPTER 6 — THE DYING CONFESSION THAT EXPOSED A MONSTER

Mercy Creek Medical became the center of another emergency.
Margaret Collins had been rushed into the trauma unit after being found unconscious inside her small cabin.
She had been poisoned.
Barely alive.
Robert stood frozen outside the operating room.
The woman he had blamed for destroying his life...
Was now fighting for hers.
Hours later, the surgeon stepped outside.
"She has very little time."
Robert entered the room alone.
Margaret looked impossibly small beneath the blankets.
Her breathing was shallow.
When she opened her eyes and recognized Robert...
She smiled sadly.
"I always wondered... if you'd still hate me."
Robert couldn't answer.
Instead, he whispered,
"Why didn't you trust me?"
Margaret coughed painfully.
"I wanted to."
"...But Daniel found me first."
Robert's heart stopped.
"My brother?"
She nodded weakly.
"He wasn't just drowning in debt."
"He planned everything."
Margaret revealed the truth she had carried for twenty-six years.
Daniel had arranged the brake failure.
He intended to inherit Robert's shares in the family's rapidly growing medical company after Robert's entire family disappeared.
But Claire survived the crash long enough to call Margaret.
Margaret reached the river before Daniel's men.
She rescued Ethan.
Daniel believed the child had drowned.
So Margaret spent decades hiding Logan.
Robert felt physically sick.
"My own brother..."
Margaret reached beneath her pillow.
With trembling fingers she handed Robert a small digital recorder.
"I recorded him."
"He confessed."
"He never knew."
Robert pressed play.
Daniel's younger voice filled the quiet hospital room.
"Once Robert loses everything, the company belongs to me. No child... no heir... no problem."
Robert nearly collapsed.
At that exact moment, the hospital television interrupted its programming.
BREAKING NEWS.
A prominent businessman had just announced his candidacy for governor.
The camera zoomed in.
Joanna gasped.
Logan stood up so quickly his chair crashed backward.
Robert stared at the television in horror.
The smiling man waving to reporters was...
Daniel Wright.
The same man who had murdered for power.
The same man who believed every witness was dead.
And now...
He wanted to become one of the most powerful politicians in the state.
None of them noticed the black SUV slowly pulling into the hospital parking lot.
Inside sat two men.
One spoke quietly into a phone.
May you like
"Target confirmed."
"Finish the Wright family tonight."
