CHAPTER 5 — "I DIDN'T STEAL HIM... I SAVED HIM."

The letter was nearly thirty pages long.
Robert insisted everyone be present before opening it.
Joanna sat beside Logan, their sleeping baby resting peacefully in her arms.
Robert unfolded the fragile paper.
Margaret's handwriting shook across every page.
If you are reading this, then I have failed to keep my promise.
Robert continued reading aloud.
Twenty-six years earlier, Margaret had not been a volunteer.
She had been Claire Wright's closest friend.
The room fell silent.
Robert looked up.
"What?"
Margaret described how Claire had discovered something horrifying just weeks after Ethan's birth.
Robert's younger brother...
Daniel Wright...
Had secretly borrowed millions from organized investors.
He had used Robert's name as collateral.
When the fraud collapsed, dangerous people came looking for the Wright family.
Claire feared their baby would become leverage.
According to the letter, the car crash had not been an accident.
Someone had tampered with the brakes.
Claire realized it moments before the vehicle lost control.
She called Margaret seconds before impact.
"If anything happens to me... save Ethan."
Margaret reached the river before emergency crews.
She found the infant alive inside a partially submerged safety seat.
Claire was already gone.
Margaret panicked.
She believed whoever caused the crash would keep searching for Ethan.
So she made a decision that would haunt her forever.
She disappeared with the baby.
She changed his name.
Raised him as her own.
Never collected a single dollar.
Never married.
Never had another child.
Every birthday she secretly visited Claire's grave.
Every Christmas she left flowers.
Every year she wrote another letter she never mailed.
Robert lowered the pages.
His hands shook violently.
"I spent twenty-six years hating the woman who..."
"...may have saved my grandson."
Logan covered his face.
"My whole life... she never stopped telling me I was loved."
Tears rolled down Joanna's cheeks.
"Then why didn't she ever tell you the truth?"
Robert looked back at the final page.
Margaret had written only one sentence.
"Because monsters were still looking for him."
Before anyone could speak...
Robert's phone rang.
The detective's voice sounded urgent.
"Doctor Wright..."
May you like
"We found Margaret."
"...But someone got to her first."
