CHAPTER 1 – The Kindness Nobody Noticed
Emily Carter worked twelve-hour shifts behind the meat counter of a tiny neighborhood grocery store. At twenty-eight, life had already taken almost everything from her. Her father had passed away, her fiancé had walked out after she lost her apartment, and every paycheck disappeared before the week was over.
Still... she smiled.
Because smiling cost nothing.
One freezing Thursday afternoon, an elderly woman slowly walked into the store. Her gray coat was patched in several places, her shoes were worn thin, and her trembling hands clutched a tiny shopping list.
She quietly picked up a loaf of bread, a carton of milk, and a small package of soup.
When she reached the register, her face turned pale.
"I'm... I'm short twenty dollars."
The cashier sighed loudly.
People waiting in line rolled their eyes.
"Come back when you have enough money," another customer muttered.
The old woman apologized over and over as she began putting the food back on the shelf.
Emily couldn't watch anymore.
"Stop."
She walked over, opened her nearly empty wallet, and placed her last twenty-dollar bill on the counter.
"I'll pay."
The old woman's eyes filled with tears.
"You don't even know me."
Emily smiled.
"I don't have to."
The entire store became silent.
The old woman gently squeezed Emily's hand.
"One day," she whispered, "people will know your heart."
Emily laughed awkwardly.
"It's only twenty dollars."
The woman smiled strangely before leaving the store.
From across the street...
A black luxury SUV had been watching everything.
Inside, a sharply dressed man lowered his sunglasses.
"Did you record it?"
"Yes, sir."
"Good."
"Mrs. Whitmore wanted to know if anyone still helps strangers without expecting anything."
The man smiled.
"I think she finally found the right person."
