CHAPTER 6 – The Bomb That Was Never Meant to Explode

The countdown echoed through the abandoned warehouse.
09:43... 09:42...
No one moved.
The bomb squad rushed toward Eleanor, but Victor raised his pistol.
"One more step," he shouted, "and everyone dies!"
Detective Ryan Brooks signaled his officers to hold their fire.
Emily stared at the timer.
Something wasn't right.
Victor wasn't looking at the bomb.
He kept glancing toward the large steel doors behind him.
Almost as if...
He was waiting for someone else.
Suddenly, a black helicopter thundered overhead.
The roof hatch burst open.
Armed mercenaries rappelled into the warehouse.
None of them wore police uniforms.
Their leader removed his mask.
Even Victor looked stunned.
"You..." Victor whispered.
The man smiled.
"You've done well."
"But your part of the deal is over."
Without warning—
The mercenary shot Victor in the shoulder.
Victor collapsed, screaming.
"You promised the company would be mine!"
The man laughed.
"I lied."
The mercenaries seized control of the warehouse within seconds.
Their leader slowly walked toward Eleanor.
"Mrs. Whitmore..."
"You've spent forty years building an empire."
"Tonight, I'm taking every dollar."
Eleanor stared at him.
"I know who you are."
Emily frowned.
"You know him?"
Eleanor nodded.
"His name isn't Daniel Cross."
"It's Richard Hale."
"My former business partner."
The room fell silent.
Thirty-five years earlier, Richard and Eleanor had founded Whitmore Holdings together.
But Richard had secretly stolen company funds.
When Eleanor uncovered the fraud, she reported him.
He disappeared before the trial.
Everyone believed he had died overseas.
Instead...
He had spent decades building a private criminal network.
Victor had only been a pawn.
Richard had manipulated him for months, feeding his hatred and promising him control of the company.
The bomb suddenly beeped louder.
04:58... 04:57...
Richard smiled.
"There is no way to stop it."
"By the time the police evacuate this building..."
"Your empire dies with you."
The bomb technician desperately pulled away the metal panel.
His face turned white.
"There are six wires."
"No manufacturer."
"No serial number."
"This bomb is custom-built."
Emily looked around frantically.
Then she noticed something hidden beneath the timer.
A tiny engraved symbol.
A chess knight.
She remembered seeing the same symbol years ago.
On her father's old toolbox.
Her father had once told her,
"Whenever you see that symbol... don't trust what's in front of you. The real answer is always hidden underneath."
Emily dropped to her knees.
She ripped away the metal plate beneath the timer.
Everyone gasped.
There was no explosive.
Only speakers.
The terrifying countdown...
Was fake.
Richard's smile vanished.
"What?"
At that exact moment—
A deafening explosion shook the warehouse.
But it didn't come from the chair.
It came from the steel doors behind Richard.
The police had secretly planted breaching charges while he was distracted.
The doors blasted inward.
Dozens of federal agents stormed inside.
"FBI! DROP YOUR WEAPONS!"
Gunfire erupted across the warehouse.
Richard escaped through a side tunnel just before agents reached him.
Victor, bleeding heavily on the floor, grabbed Emily's hand.
"I never wanted this..." he whispered.
"I thought Richard only wanted revenge against Mother."
Emily looked into his frightened eyes.
"Then help us stop him."
Victor slowly nodded.
"There is one thing..."
"He stole something much more valuable than the company."
Emily frowned.
"What could be worth more than billions?"
Victor's voice trembled.
"A file."
"A list of every politician, judge, billionaire, and CEO Richard has been blackmailing for thirty years."
"If that list becomes public..."
"It won't just destroy Whitmore Holdings."
"It could bring down some of the most powerful people in America."
And somewhere deep beneath the city...
Richard Hale smiled as he opened a steel briefcase.
Inside lay the black file...
Along with a photograph of Emily.

Across it, in red ink, were five chilling words.
"The granddaughter dies next."
