CHAPTER 4 – The Secret They Buried for Thirty Years

Emily couldn't stop staring at the birth certificate.

Her hands trembled.

"My... grandmother?"

Eleanor nodded slowly, tears filling her eyes.

"Your father was my eldest son."

Emily looked up in shock.

"But you said your children were Victor, Cassandra, and Nathan."

"They're not my oldest."

The room fell silent.

Eleanor took a deep breath before revealing the secret she had hidden for over thirty years.

"When your father, Michael Whitmore, fell in love with your mother, she was a waitress."

"My family called her a gold digger."

"The board threatened to destroy everything I had built if Michael inherited the company."

"They forced me to choose..."

"My empire... or my son."

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

"You chose the company."

Eleanor closed her eyes.

"...And I lost my son forever."

Michael changed his last name.

He disappeared with his wife and newborn daughter.

For decades, Eleanor hired private investigators across the country.

But every search ended the same way.

No trace.

Then one rainy afternoon, she received heartbreaking news.

Michael had died years earlier in a factory accident.

His wife had passed away shortly afterward.

Only one person remained alive.

Emily.

"I searched for you for twelve years," Eleanor whispered.

"But every time I got close, you had already moved."

Emily remembered the endless evictions...

The cheap apartments...

The shelters...

No wonder nobody could ever find her.

Just then...

Judge Thomas Reed entered the room again.

"I have one more thing."

He handed Eleanor a sealed envelope that had been hidden inside Michael's safety deposit box.

Written across the front were five simple words.

'For my daughter, Emily.'

Emily could barely breathe as she opened it.

Inside was a faded family photograph.

On the back, her father's handwriting read:

"If Grandma ever finds you... forgive her."

Emily burst into tears.

Everything she had believed about her family...

Everything she had hated...

Changed in a single moment.

But before anyone could speak...

The television mounted on the boardroom wall suddenly switched on.

Breaking News flashed across the screen.

"Victor Whitmore escapes police custody."

The reporter continued.

"Authorities believe he is armed and has vowed revenge against Eleanor Whitmore and her newly announced heir."

Emily's heart stopped.

Victor wasn't running away.

He was coming back.

May you like

And this time...

He had nothing left to lose.
