CHAPTER 8 – Eleanor's Greatest Lie

Detective Ryan Brooks collapsed into Emily's arms.

Blood soaked through his suit as sirens echoed outside the hospital.

His final words repeated inside her head.

"Don't trust Eleanor... ever."

"No..." Emily whispered. "Please don't die."

Brooks tried to speak again.

Instead, he slipped a tiny silver key into her hand.

Then his eyes closed.

The heartbeat monitor went flat.

Emily broke down in tears.

But there was no time to grieve.

Sophia Hale smiled.

"Touching."

"But Father said emotions make people predictable."

She raised her pistol again.

Before she could fire—

Victor lunged from the hospital bed, tackling his half-sister to the floor.

The gun slid across the hallway.

Emily grabbed it first.

For one brief second...

She had Sophia at gunpoint.

"Tell me the truth!"

Sophia laughed.

"You still think Eleanor is the victim?"

Emily's hands trembled.

"What are you talking about?"

Sophia slowly stood with her hands raised.

"My father didn't destroy your family."

"Eleanor did."

Emily shook her head.

"You're lying."

"Am I?"

Sophia smiled.

"Ask yourself one question."

"If Eleanor spent twelve years searching for you..."

"How did Richard always know exactly where to find you?"

Emily froze.

That thought had never crossed her mind.

Sophia continued.

"Because every move you made..."

"...was reported to him."

Emily's heart pounded.

"No..."

"There was only one person who always knew where you lived."

"Eleanor."

Before Emily could answer, her phone vibrated.

A video call.

Unknown number.

She answered.

Richard Hale appeared on the screen.

He wasn't hiding anymore.

He smiled calmly.

"Hello, Emily."

"I see you've met Sophia."

Emily shouted,

"You murdered Detective Brooks!"

Richard ignored the accusation.

Instead, he held up an old photograph.

It showed Eleanor...

Standing beside Richard.

Holding a newborn baby.

The date was thirty-two years earlier.

"They weren't enemies then," Richard said.

"They were partners."

Emily stared at the picture.

Richard zoomed in.

Both of them were smiling.

Not like business partners.

Like lovers.

"No..." Emily whispered.

Richard nodded.

"Your grandmother never told you everything."

"Eleanor didn't betray me."

"We betrayed everyone else."

Emily felt the room spin.

Richard continued.

"We built Whitmore Holdings together."

"We bribed politicians together."

"We destroyed competitors together."

"We became rich together."

"Until she decided she no longer needed me."

He leaned closer to the camera.

"And your father..."

"He discovered every crime we committed."

Emily couldn't breathe.

"What happened to him?"

Richard's smile disappeared.

"I wanted to expose everything."

"Eleanor wanted to protect the empire."

"So she made a choice."

The screen suddenly switched to an old security video.

A factory.

Smoke.

Fire.

Emily watched in horror as her father entered the building.

Seconds later...

The doors locked behind him.

Someone had activated the emergency locks from outside.

The camera angle changed.

A woman stood in the control room.

Her face wasn't perfectly clear...

But the necklace around her neck was unmistakable.

The same emerald necklace Eleanor still wore every day.

Emily dropped the phone.

Her entire world collapsed.

Just then...

The silver key Detective Brooks had given her began glowing under the hospital lights.

Attached to it was a tiny tag.

Vault 17 – Private Archive.

Sophia looked at the key...

And for the first time...

Her confident smile disappeared.

She whispered only one sentence.

"If Brooks gave you that key..."

"Then Eleanor has already lost."

Because hidden inside Vault 17...

May you like

Was the one piece of evidence capable of destroying both Eleanor Whitmore...

...and Richard Hale forever.
