CHAPTER 1 — The Perfect Bride

The wedding looked flawless.
From the marble terrace of the mountain villa, guests watched white petals drift through the warm afternoon breeze while a string quartet played beneath crystal chandeliers suspended from ancient oak trees. Every table glittered with gold candleholders and imported orchids. News cameras remained outside the gates, hoping to capture one more photograph of the year's most talked-about marriage.
Everyone believed they were witnessing a fairy tale.
Twenty-five-year-old Sophia looked breathtaking in her elegant white gown. Her smile was warm enough to convince anyone she had found true happiness.
Standing beside her was Richard Ashford, a seventy-three-year-old business magnate whose companies stretched across several countries. Years had silvered his hair, but his sharp blue eyes still carried the confidence of a man who had built an empire from nothing.
The guests whispered.
"She truly loves him."
"They're proof that love has no age."
"What an incredible couple."
No one noticed that Sophia never looked into Richard's eyes for more than a second.
Whenever he reached for her hand, her smile appeared only after the cameras pointed in her direction.
To everyone else, she was the perfect bride.
Inside her mind...
She was counting.
Counting the mansions.
Counting the investment accounts.
Counting the luxury cars, the private islands, the artwork, the companies...
Counting every dollar she believed would soon belong to her.
Months earlier, Sophia had researched Richard long before agreeing to marry him.
She knew he had lost his wife years ago.
She knew he rarely trusted people.
She knew he had no children.
Most importantly...
She believed there was no one else standing between her and a fortune worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
She spent months becoming exactly the woman Richard wanted.
She laughed at his stories.
She remembered every anniversary.
She accompanied him to charity galas.
She convinced everyone—including Richard—that she genuinely loved him.
Only one person had ever questioned her intentions.
Richard's longtime attorney, Charles Benton.
On the morning of the wedding, Charles quietly approached Richard before the ceremony.
"Are you absolutely certain?" he asked.
Richard smiled calmly.
"I've never been more certain."
Charles hesitated.
"I investigated everything she allowed us to see."
"And?"
"There are... gaps."
Richard simply nodded.
"I know."
The lawyer frowned.
"You know?"
"I know much more than you think."
Charles waited for an explanation.
None came.
Richard adjusted his tie, smiled toward the garden where Sophia stood posing for photographs, and quietly said,
"Sometimes the only way to discover the truth... is to let someone believe they've already won."
Those words stayed with Charles all afternoon.
Meanwhile, Sophia accepted congratulations from hundreds of guests.
Every compliment made her more confident.
By sunset, she believed her performance had been flawless.
She had no idea someone else had been acting just as convincingly.
When the ceremony ended, Richard took the microphone.
"My beautiful wife deserves one unforgettable surprise."
The guests applauded.
He pointed toward the private helipad overlooking the cliffs.
A sleek black helicopter waited with its engines already humming.
"We're going to watch the sunset above the ocean."
Sophia kissed him before the cheering crowd.
Inside...

She smiled for an entirely different reason.
She had already chosen where Richard would die.
