CHAPTER 7 — The Last Desperate Gamble

Rain hammered against the roof of the lake house.
Police vehicles surrounded the property from every direction. Flashing red and blue lights reflected across the wet windows like waves of fire.
Inside, no one moved.
Victor tightened his grip on the handgun.
Richard stood calmly on the porch, surrounded by detectives and federal agents, his eyes never leaving the two people who had tried to destroy his life.
"Victor," Richard called out evenly. "It's over."
Victor laughed.
"No, Richard. It isn't."
In one swift motion, he grabbed Sophia by the arm and pulled her in front of him, pressing the gun against her shoulder.
She gasped in terror.
"Victor... what are you doing?"
"Buying myself time."
"You said we'd escape together!"
Victor smirked.
"I've lied to richer people than you."
Sophia finally understood the truth.
She had never been his partner.
She had been expendable from the very beginning.
Outside, officers slowly tightened the perimeter.
Daniel Cross quietly signaled the tactical team to hold their position.
"No one fires," he ordered. "Not while she's in front of him."
Richard stepped one pace closer.
"You've spent your entire life running, Victor."
"And you've spent yours buying people," Victor shot back.
Richard didn't respond.
Instead, he reached into his coat.
Several officers tensed.
Slowly, Richard removed a worn leather wallet.
From inside, he pulled an old photograph.
It showed a much younger Victor standing beside another man.
The resemblance was unmistakable.
Sophia stared at the picture.
"Who is that?"
Richard answered without taking his eyes off Victor.
"My younger brother."
Silence filled the room.
Sophia blinked in disbelief.
Victor's smile disappeared.
Richard continued.
"Twenty years ago, my brother trusted Victor with our family's first company."
"He disappeared with every dollar."
"My brother lost everything."
"He took his own life six months later."
Sophia felt her knees weaken.
"So... this wasn't random."
Richard nodded slowly.
"No."
"I recognized Victor the day I first saw him at the charity gala."
Victor's jaw tightened.
"You should've stayed out of my life."
"I intended to."
Richard's voice remained calm.
"But when I learned you were courting Sophia..."
"...I knew exactly what your next target would be."
Sophia stared at Richard in horror.
"You knew... from the beginning?"
"I suspected."
"Then why marry me?"
Richard's answer stunned everyone.
"Because I needed proof."
Victor suddenly roared with anger.
"You used her!"
Richard replied quietly,
"No."
"She made her own choices."
For a long moment, no one spoke.
Then Victor made a fatal mistake.
He glanced toward the back window.
That single distraction was all the tactical team needed.
A flash grenade exploded outside.
Victor instinctively turned.
Sophia threw herself to the floor.
The front door burst open.
Within seconds, officers tackled Victor to the ground.
The handgun slid across the wooden floor.
Handcuffs snapped shut around his wrists.
