CHAPTER 9 — The Letter No One Was Meant to Read

Nearly one year had passed.

The headlines had faded.

The television cameras had disappeared.

Life slowly returned to normal.

Richard Ashford spent most of his days overseeing the Ashford Foundation, which had become one of the country's largest charitable organizations. Schools, hospitals, and emergency shelters now carried his late wife's name, fulfilling a promise he had made long ago.

Yet one question still lingered in his mind.

Why had Sophia chosen him?

Greed explained part of it.

But not all of it.

One rainy afternoon, Daniel Cross entered Richard's office carrying a small evidence box.

"The police recovered these from Victor Hale's storage unit," he said.

"Most of it is worthless."

"But this..."

He placed an old leather journal on Richard's desk.

It belonged to Victor.

Richard opened the first page.

What he discovered made him pause.

The journal contained the names of wealthy men and women from around the world.

Beside each name were dates...

Estimated fortunes...

Personal habits...

Weaknesses...

Some names had been crossed out.

Others had the word SUCCESS written beside them.

Richard's name appeared near the end.

Underneath it, Victor had written:

"Ashford doesn't trust easily. Remove the loneliness, and the money will follow."

Richard turned another page.

Then another.

Finally, he reached an envelope marked:

IF ANYTHING HAPPENS TO ME.

Inside was a handwritten confession.

Victor admitted that he had manipulated dozens of people over two decades, convincing lonely victims that someone genuinely loved them before stealing their wealth.

Sophia had not been the mastermind.

She had originally been recruited to play a role.

But over time...

She became consumed by the same greed that had trapped Victor years earlier.

Richard quietly closed the journal.

He felt no satisfaction.

Only sadness.

"So many lives..." he murmured.

Daniel nodded.

"At least he'll never hurt anyone again."

Richard looked out the window.

"I hope that's true."

At that very moment, across the prison yard, Sophia sat alone on a concrete bench.

A correctional officer approached.

"You have a visitor."

Sophia looked surprised.

"I don't know anyone anymore."

The officer handed her a sealed envelope.

"There isn't a visitor."

"It was mailed."

The sender's name stunned her.

Richard Ashford.

With trembling hands, she opened the letter.

Inside was a single handwritten page.

Sophia,

Nothing in this letter changes what happened.

Justice must take its course.

But carrying hatred forever would only make two victims instead of one.

I have forgiven you—not because you earned it, but because I refuse to let betrayal define the rest of my life.

Use whatever years you have left to become someone you would have been proud to meet before greed took control.

—Richard

Sophia read the letter again.

And again.

For the first time since the helicopter...

She cried without trying to hide it.
