CHAPTER 8 — The Fortune That Never Existed

Forty-eight hours later...
Sophia sat alone in a gray interrogation room.
The expensive wedding dress had been replaced by a plain prison uniform.
Dark circles surrounded her eyes.
She hadn't slept.
Across the table sat Richard.
This was the first time they had spoken alone since the helicopter.
Sophia looked down.
"I suppose you're here to celebrate."
Richard quietly shook his head.
"No."
"I came because you deserve to know the truth."
She looked up.
"What truth?"
Richard placed a thin folder on the table.
"It contains every document connected to my estate."
Sophia slowly opened it.
Page after page left her speechless.
The mansions...
Already donated to a charitable housing foundation.
The yacht...
Transferred months earlier to a maritime rescue organization.
The luxury cars...
Auctioned to fund children's hospitals.
His company shares...
Locked inside a charitable trust that no private individual could inherit.
His personal fortune...
Almost entirely committed to scholarships, medical research, and disaster relief.
Sophia stared at him.
"There... there's almost nothing left."
Richard nodded.
"Not for personal inheritance."
"You..." she whispered. "You gave it away?"
"I began after my first wife passed away."
"Money couldn't bring her back."
"So I decided it should bring hope to someone else."
Sophia closed the folder with trembling hands.
"I killed for something that didn't even exist."
Richard corrected her gently.
"You tried to."
Tears streamed down her face.
For the first time, they were not tears of fear.
They were tears of regret.
"I ruined my life..."
Richard stood.
"No, Sophia."
"You ruined it the moment you believed money was worth more than integrity."
He walked toward the door before stopping one final time.
"The greatest fortune I ever owned wasn't in my bank accounts."
She looked up.
"What was it?"
Richard gave a faint, sad smile.
"The ability to trust."
"And that's the one thing you took from me."
Without another word, he left the room.
Months later, Victor was convicted on multiple counts of fraud, conspiracy, kidnapping, and attempted murder.
Sophia was convicted for the attempted murder of Richard Ashford and related offenses.
Richard never remarried.
Instead, he devoted the rest of his life to expanding the charitable foundation he had built in his late wife's memory.
The mansion overlooking the sea eventually became a home for children who had lost their families.
People often called Richard one of the richest men in the country.
But those who truly knew his story understood something far more important.
