CHAPTER 10 — The Woman Behind Everything

Smoke filled the cabin.
Bullets tore through the walls.
Ethan pushed Emily and Lily through a hidden trapdoor beneath the fireplace.
"Go!"
"What about you?" Emily cried.
"I'll hold them."
Lily refused to let go of his hand.
"Daddy, please!"
Ethan kissed her forehead.
"I promised I'd always come back."
Emily dragged Lily into the underground tunnel as explosions shook the cabin above.
Halfway through the tunnel...
They found someone waiting.
The silver-haired woman.
She lowered her weapon slowly.
"Emily."
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Then the woman reached into her pocket and removed half of a broken silver necklace.
Emily instinctively touched the necklace she had worn since childhood.
The two halves fit together perfectly.
Tears streamed down the woman's face.
"I've dreamed of this moment for twenty-six years."
Emily whispered only one word.
"...Mom?"
The woman nodded.
Before they could embrace—
The tunnel lights turned red.
A calm voice echoed through hidden speakers.
"Touching."
Everyone turned toward the tunnel entrance.
Victoria Carter stepped into the light, elegantly dressed despite the chaos.
She wasn't surrounded by bodyguards.
She didn't need them.
She smiled at Emily.
"You still don't understand, do you?"
Emily stared at the woman she had once called Mother.
"You destroyed our family."
Victoria laughed softly.
"No."
"I created it."
She pulled out a thick folder.
Emily's birth certificate.
Lily's adoption papers.
Every legal document.
Then she revealed the one truth no one had imagined.
"There was never a trafficking organization."
"There was never a secret syndicate."
"It was all... my company."
She looked directly at Emily.
"I adopted you because I needed an heir."
"I hunted Lily because she was the only person who could challenge your inheritance."
Emily's heart nearly stopped.
Victoria raised a remote control.
"I've already transferred every asset into your name."
Ethan and the silver-haired woman stared at her in shock.
Victoria smiled one final time.
"Congratulations, Emily."
"As of thirty seconds ago..."
"...you are the richest woman in America."
A deafening explosion shook the tunnel.
The screen of Ethan's phone lit up with breaking news:
VICTORIA CARTER FOUND DEAD AFTER PRIVATE HELICOPTER EXPLOSION.
Emily looked up in horror.
Victoria was still standing in front of them.
Smiling.
She slowly removed her face.
It wasn't skin.
It was a hyper-realistic silicone mask.
The woman beneath it was someone none of them recognized.
She whispered one final sentence before disappearing into the darkness:
May you like
"Victoria Carter has been dead for ten years."
THE END... OR IS IT?
