CHAPTER 2 — The Letter That Changed Everything
Emily couldn't breathe.
The words blurred through her tears as she unfolded the rest of the letter.
"I know you hate me. You have every reason to. But everything you believed about why I left... was a lie."
She looked toward the little girl sleeping peacefully on the couch, wrapped in a blanket beside the fireplace.
Who was she?
Why had he sent her here?
The letter continued.
"Her name is Lily. She isn't my daughter by blood."
Emily froze.
"Five years ago I found her after a terrible car accident that killed her parents. Someone powerful wanted her to disappear because of what her father discovered before he died."
Emily stared at the page.
This couldn't be real.
"I hid her. I became her legal guardian in secret. The people looking for her never stopped searching. When they learned about you, I had only one choice... I had to leave before they used you against me."
Emily remembered every sleepless night.
Every birthday spent crying.
Every anniversary she spent believing she had never been enough.
The truth was almost unbearable.
Then another sheet slipped from the envelope.
It wasn't a letter.
It was a newspaper clipping.
Across the top was a headline:
LOCAL BUSINESSMAN DIES IN MOUNTAIN CAR CRASH. BODY TOO DAMAGED TO IDENTIFY.
Emily's hands trembled.
That wasn't just any businessman.
It was her husband's name.
Tears streamed down her face.
He hadn't abandoned her.
He had sacrificed everything to keep an innocent child alive.
Just then...
Someone knocked again.
Three slow knocks.
Emily looked through the window.
A black SUV was parked across the street.
Three men in dark coats stepped out.
One of them held a photograph.
It was Lily.
The tallest man looked directly at Emily's house... then smiled.
"I know she's inside," he said quietly.
Emily locked the door.
