CHAPTER 9 — The Final Recording

Emily stood frozen.
Her entire life had just been rewritten.
The woman she had mourned as dead...
was alive.
The woman she had called "Mom" for twenty-five years...
had orchestrated the murder of her father, hunted Lily, and tried to erase every trace of the truth.
Ethan placed the black journal on the table.
"We're running out of time."
He opened the last hidden compartment inside the cover.
A tiny memory card slid into his hand.
"This," he whispered, "is what they've been killing for."
Emily inserted it into her laptop.
A video began.
The screen showed a luxurious conference room from years earlier.
At the head of the table sat Victoria Carter—Emily's adoptive mother.
Around her were senators, billionaires, judges, and CEOs.
Everyone laughed as champagne glasses clinked together.
Then Victoria spoke.
"No loose ends."
She pointed at two photographs.
One was Emily's father.
The other was Lily's biological father.
"They both know too much."
One businessman asked quietly,
"And the wives?"
Victoria smiled without hesitation.
"Make them disappear."
Emily covered her mouth.
The next image showed security footage of the night Ethan had supposedly died.
A black SUV deliberately forced his car off a mountain road.
The explosion had been real.
But another camera revealed something no one expected.
Seconds before the car exploded...
someone had pulled Ethan out through the passenger window.
The rescuer stepped briefly into the light.
Emily gasped.
It was the silver-haired woman.
Her real mother.
Ethan looked at Emily.
"She saved my life."
"She spent years protecting us from the shadows."
Emily burst into tears.
Everything she had believed...
had been a carefully constructed lie.
Suddenly Ethan's phone buzzed.
One message.
THEY KNOW WHERE WE ARE. LEAVE NOW.
Before anyone could move—
The windows exploded inward.
Laser sights covered every wall.
A loudspeaker echoed outside.
"Ethan Cole!"
"You have sixty seconds."
May you like
"Hand over Emily and the child..."
"...or everyone inside dies."
