CHAPTER 4 — The Secret Beneath the Church

By the time Emily reached Rosewood Church, her lungs were burning and Lily’s small hand was ice-cold in hers.
An old priest opened the side door before Emily could knock.
His face turned pale when he saw Lily.
“Oh my God,” he whispered. “He was right.”
Emily pushed inside. “You knew my husband?”
Father Thomas locked the door behind them.
“I knew the man he became,” he said. “And I know why he died.”
Emily’s heart clenched.
The priest led them downstairs into a hidden basement filled with old filing cabinets, photographs, and newspaper clippings.
On the wall was a picture of Lily’s real father.
Beside it was another photograph.
Emily gasped.
It showed her husband standing next to Lily’s father… and beside them was a woman Emily recognized instantly.
Her own mother.
The mother Emily had been told died when she was a child.
Father Thomas looked at her with grief in his eyes.
“Emily,” he said quietly, “your mother didn’t die.”
Emily stepped back, shaking her head.
“No… that’s impossible.”
The priest placed the flash drive into an old laptop.
A video appeared.
A woman’s face filled the screen—older, tired, but unmistakably familiar.
Emily’s mother.
“If my daughter is watching this,” the woman said, “then the people who destroyed our family have found Lily.”
Emily covered her mouth, sobbing.
Then her mother leaned closer to the camera and whispered the secret that changed everything:
“Lily isn’t just the child your husband protected.”
