CHAPTER 5 — The Sister She Never Knew
Emily couldn't move.
The laptop screen blurred through her tears as her mother's recorded message continued.
"Lily is your little sister."
The room fell into a suffocating silence.
Emily slowly turned toward the frightened six-year-old girl, who sat hugging her knees in the corner.
The same blue eyes.
The same tiny birthmark behind her left ear.
The same dimple that Emily remembered seeing in her childhood photos.
How had she never noticed?
"No..." Emily whispered. "That's impossible."
Father Thomas closed his eyes.
"It isn't."
He handed Emily a worn leather folder sealed with wax.
Inside were hospital records, adoption papers, and DNA reports.
Everything matched.
Twenty-six years earlier, Emily's parents had uncovered evidence that one of the most powerful business empires in the country had been trafficking children through fake adoption agencies.
Before they could expose the truth, the organization struck first.
Emily's father was murdered.
Her mother disappeared.
Emily herself was secretly adopted by relatives for protection.
But her mother had been pregnant.
She gave birth in hiding.
That baby...
...was Lily.
Emily's entire life had been built on a lie.
The husband she believed had abandoned her hadn't betrayed her.
He had spent six years protecting her little sister.
Father Thomas spoke softly.
"Your husband made one promise."
"What promise?"
"That if he ever failed..."
"...you would become Lily's family."
Emily looked across the room.
Lily's eyes were full of fear.
Slowly, Emily knelt in front of her.
"You've been alone for a long time, haven't you?"
Lily nodded.
"I don't want another mommy."
Emily's heart shattered.
"I just want my sister."
Emily burst into tears.
Without saying another word...
She wrapped Lily in the tightest hug of her life.
For the first time...
Neither of them was alone anymore.
But upstairs...
The church bell suddenly rang.
