Chapter 1 - The Mask Falls

The golden glow of the penthouse penthouse faded into the ice-cold reality of 3:00 AM. Adrienne Romano stood in his private study, a crystal tumbler of scotch resting untouched in his hand. The echoes of polished laughter and classical violins had long vanished, replaced by the relentless rain drumming against the bulletproof glass overlooking the Manhattan skyline.

For five years, his world had operated with absolute precision. Romano Holdings was the legitimate face of the most formidable syndicate on the East Coast, and every detail of his dual existence had been seamlessly managed by Simone Carter. She was the quiet engine behind his empire—predictable, loyal, invisible.

Until tonight.

The image of her in that deep red silk dress, laughing freely into the ear of Daniel Hayes, burned behind his eyelids. She had looked breathtaking. Unreachable. Dangerous.

"Boss."

The heavy oak door creaked open. Marco, Adrienne’s chief enforcer and most trusted lieutenant, stepped into the room. His face was grim, carrying a black leather folder.

"Did you find out who he is?" Adrienne’s voice cut through the silence like a blade.

"Daniel Hayes," Marco said, placing the folder on the desk. "On paper, he’s a high-profile venture capitalist out of Chicago. Clean record. Ivy League degree. Philanthropist."

Adrienne didn't open the folder. "And off the paper?"

Marco took a breath. "He landed at JFK three days ago on a private jet registered to an offshore shell company. That shell company traces directly to the Vance Syndicate."

Adrienne’s hand tightened around his glass until the crystal groaned under the pressure. The Vance Syndicate were their deadliest rivals—a brutal cartel pushing into New York, eager to trigger a turf war.

"Are you telling me my executive secretary is sleeping with a strategist for our enemies?" Adrienne whispered, his voice dangerously low.

"We don't know if she’s sleeping with him, boss," Marco warned carefully. "Or if she even knows who he really works for. But Daniel Hayes didn't come to New York to celebrate your birthday. He came for her."

Adrienne stared out into the torrential rain. The realization was a sudden, violent blow to his pride. He had spent half a decade believing Simone was a harmless, devoted employee who lived solely to organize his life. Now, dark threads were tying her to the very people who wanted him dead.

"Put eyes on her apartment," Adrienne commanded, turning around, his dark eyes void of all warmth. "Nobody touches her. Nobody speaks to her. Tomorrow morning at seven, she will walk into this building as usual. And I will find out who Simone Carter really is."
