Chapter 7 - The Ultimate Betrayal

Simone took a deep, tremulous breath. The rain continued to pour through the broken roof, soaking her curls, washing away the blood on her face.

She looked Daniel straight in the eyes. "You want the master code?"

"Give it to me, Simone. We can be rich. We can leave this city forever," Daniel urged, greed shining in his eyes.

"The code," Simone said, her voice dropping to an icy chill, "is 'Romano Never Falls'."

Before Daniel could process the words, Simone violently shoved her chair back with all her weight, crashing into Daniel’s legs.

BANG!

Adrienne fired instantly. The bullet caught Daniel squarely in the chest, lifting him off his feet and throwing him backward into the darkness.

"Kill him!" Vance screamed to his snipers lurking on the catwalks above.

Muzzle flashes illuminated the shadowy foundry. Adrienne dived behind a steel pillar, returning fire with lethal, military precision. The sound of gunfire was deafening, brass casings raining onto the concrete floor like metallic hailstones.

Adrienne dropped two enforcers dropping from the upper rafters, then charged through the hail of bullets, sliding across the wet floor toward Simone. He whipped out a combat knife, slicing her leather bindings in a fraction of a second.

"Can you run?" Adrienne yelled over the deafening gunshots.

"I’m not leaving you!" Simone screamed back, grabbing a dropped pistol from the floor with shocking familiarity, instantly firing two shots into an approaching Vance gunman.

Adrienne stared at her in utter shock. "Where did you learn to shoot like that?!"

"I’m the Iron Ledger’s daughter!" Simone yelled back, her eyes blazing with fierce adrenaline. "Did you really think I spent my childhood doing spreadsheets?!"
