CHAPTER 1 – The Couch Everyone Threw Away

Emily Carter had spent the last three years surviving instead of living.

After losing her husband to a tragic accident and drowning in medical debt, she worked double shifts cleaning office buildings at night and collecting discarded furniture during the day. Every dollar mattered. Every piece of wood, every old chair, every broken lamp could mean another meal for her eight-year-old son.

That evening, rain clouds rolled over the abandoned apartment complex on the edge of town.

As Emily dragged two heavy garbage bags across the cracked pavement, something caught her eye.

An old brown sofa.

Its leather was torn. Springs poked through the cushions. It looked worthless.

Residents had left it outside with the trash.

Emily smiled weakly.

"Maybe I can fix it... or at least sell the wood frame."

She dropped her bags and struggled to push the couch toward her rusty pickup truck.

An elderly janitor standing nearby suddenly shouted,

"Don't touch that couch!"

Emily froze.

The old man hurried over, breathing heavily.

"I've worked here for thirty years," he whispered. "That sofa belonged to Apartment 407... Nobody has ever dared move it."

Emily frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

The janitor looked around nervously before lowering his voice.

"The owner disappeared twenty-five years ago."

"They searched the building..."

"They searched the apartment..."

"But no one ever opened that couch."

Emily laughed awkwardly.

"It’s just old furniture."

The old man slowly shook his head.

"No..."

"The owner told everyone..."

'If I never come back... my entire life is inside that sofa.'

Emily stared at the ripped cushions.

For the first time...

She wasn't looking at trash anymore.

She was looking at a mystery.

That night, instead of taking it to the junkyard, she wheeled the couch into her tiny garage.

She grabbed a utility knife.

One careful cut.

Another.

The stuffing began spilling onto the floor.

Then...

CLINK!

Metal.

Something hidden deep inside.

Emily reached into the darkness.

Her fingers wrapped around a cold steel box.

Her heart nearly stopped.
