CHAPTER 3 – The Men Who Came for the Fortune

Emily’s body went cold.
The tallest man stepped closer, his polished shoes clicking against the wet garage floor.
“Hand over the documents,” he said. “You have no idea what you found.”
Emily gripped the steel box against her chest.
“I found it in trash. It belongs to me now.”
The man laughed.
“No, sweetheart. That couch was never trash. It was evidence.”
Behind him, one of the men pulled out an old photograph.
Emily’s breath caught.
It showed the missing apartment owner standing beside three young businessmen.
One of them looked exactly like the man in front of her.
Only younger.
The tall man’s smile vanished.
“My father spent twenty-five years hiding what he stole from our family. Those buildings belong to us.”
Emily slowly stepped backward.
But then she remembered the letter.
To the person honest enough to open this.
Her hands trembled as she flipped to the final page of the journal.
And there it was.
A name.
A crime.
A confession.
The missing owner hadn’t stolen anything.
He had been betrayed by his own partners.
And the man standing in Emily’s garage…
was the son of one of the men who tried to erase him.
Suddenly, red and blue lights flashed outside.
Police sirens screamed through the rain.
The tall man spun around in panic.
Emily’s son stepped out from behind the washing machine, holding her phone.
“I called 911, Mom,” he whispered.
The police rushed in.
The men were arrested on the spot.
But the biggest shock came the next morning.
A lawyer arrived at Emily’s house with a sealed file.
The missing millionaire had left one final condition in his will:
Whoever discovered the couch, opened the box, and protected the truth…
would inherit everything.
Emily stared at the papers, tears filling her eyes.
She had spent years picking up what others threw away.
But this time…
May you like
the thing the world abandoned…
picked her back.
