CHAPTER 4 – The Will Had One Final Secret

Emily thought the nightmare was finally over.
The three men were in police custody.
The lockbox was now sitting inside an evidence room.
And every news channel in the city was calling her "The Woman Who Found the Lost Fortune."
But she had no idea the real story had only just begun.
The attorney, Benjamin Hayes, placed a thick envelope on Emily's kitchen table.
"I couldn't give you this until today," he said quietly. "It was the final instruction in Mr. Harrison Whitmore's will."
Emily carefully opened the envelope.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
"If you are reading this, then greed has already revealed its true face."
"The people who came after the documents were never my greatest enemies."
"The real enemy is someone the entire city trusts."
Emily frowned.
Benjamin looked confused.
"There should only be one page."
Emily turned the letter over.
A small key was taped to the back.
Attached was a note.
'Storage Unit C-17. Midnight. Come alone.'
Benjamin's face turned pale.
"I've never seen this before."
Emily's heartbeat quickened.
"Did you know about this storage unit?"
Benjamin slowly shook his head.
"No."
"Which means someone hid this inside the envelope after Mr. Whitmore died..."
That night...
Emily drove alone to an abandoned industrial district on the edge of the city.
Rain pounded against her windshield.
Storage Unit C-17 stood at the very end of the row.
The tiny brass key fit perfectly.
The rusty door slowly rolled upward.
Inside...
There was no money.
No gold.
No artwork.
Only hundreds of neatly labeled archive boxes.
Each one carried the names of politicians...
Judges...
Police chiefs...
And some of the city's wealthiest business leaders.
Emily opened the first box.
Photos.
Contracts.
Secret bank transfers.
Bribery records.
Blackmail payments.
Then she reached the final box.
Her hands froze.
On the lid was a single name.
Benjamin Hayes.
The same lawyer standing beside her every step of the way.
Before Emily could open it—
A familiar voice echoed through the warehouse.
"I was hoping you'd find that box before the police did."
Emily turned around.
Benjamin stepped out of the darkness...
Holding a gun.
His friendly smile was gone.
"I spent twenty-five years protecting Harrison Whitmore's secret."
He slowly aimed the weapon at Emily.
"And I'm not letting a cleaning lady destroy everything I built."
Emily realized, with terrifying clarity...
The lawyer had never been helping her.
He had been watching her.

For her to uncover the final secret for him.
