CHAPTER 6 – The Man Everyone Thought Was Dead

Emily couldn't sleep.

The anonymous message replayed in her mind all night.

"This is only the beginning, Ms. Carter."

Who had taken the photo?

Who knew she had escaped the explosion?

And why hadn't they killed her when they had the chance?

The next morning, Detective Sarah Collins arrived at Emily's house with devastating news.

"We searched the warehouse all night," she said.

"We found traces of Benjamin Hayes' blood."

Emily looked hopeful.

"So he's dead?"

Sarah slowly shook her head.

"Not enough blood."

"It looks like someone wanted us to think he died."

Emily's stomach tightened.

Benjamin was alive.

Somewhere.

Watching.

Three days later, Emily received another envelope.

No return address.

No fingerprints.

Inside was a single train ticket.

Destination:

Raven's Point.

Departure:

Tonight. 11:45 PM.

Folded beneath the ticket was another note.

"If you truly want Harrison Whitmore's legacy... come alone."

Emily knew it could be a trap.

But she also knew it might be her only chance to learn the truth.

The train stopped just before dawn.

Raven's Point was a forgotten coastal town surrounded by thick fog.

An old fisherman waited silently beside the station.

"You must be Emily."

Without another word, he led her to an abandoned lighthouse overlooking the sea.

Inside, hidden beneath loose wooden planks, was a narrow staircase descending underground.

Emily followed the dim lights until she reached a massive steel door.

The fisherman entered a six-digit code.

The door slowly opened.

Emily gasped.

Inside was a fully equipped underground archive.

Computers.

Security monitors.

Shelves filled with identical black boxes.

On the largest wall hung dozens of photographs connected by red strings.

Every face belonged to someone powerful.

Politicians.

Judges.

Corporate executives.

And in the center...

Benjamin Hayes.

But another photograph caught Emily's attention.

She froze.

It was Harrison Whitmore.

Alive.

Not an old photograph.

A recent one.

Taken only weeks ago.

Before she could speak, a familiar voice echoed through the room.

"I was wondering how long it would take you."

Emily slowly turned around.

An elderly man stepped out of the shadows, leaning on a wooden cane.

His silver hair was longer.

His beard hid most of his face.

But his sharp blue eyes matched the portrait from Apartment 407.

Emily whispered in disbelief,

"No..."

"It can't be..."

The old man smiled sadly.

"It has been twenty-five years since the world buried me."

"My name..."

"...is Harrison Whitmore."

Emily could barely breathe.

"You were never dead?"

Harrison nodded.

"I had to disappear."

"The people hunting those files control governments, banks... even the police."

"If they knew I was alive..."

"They would have finished what they started."

Emily looked at him in stunned silence.

"But why reveal yourself now?"

Harrison's expression grew grim.

"Because Benjamin Hayes has finally found what he's been searching for."

Emily frowned.

"I thought he wanted the evidence."

Harrison shook his head.

"He never cared about the evidence."

"He was searching for something else."

Harrison opened one final black box.

Inside lay a small velvet pouch.

Emily emptied it into her hand.

A simple silver key.

No markings.

No label.

Harrison looked directly into her eyes.

"This key doesn't unlock a fortune."

"It unlocks the only thing powerful enough to destroy every person involved."

Before Emily could ask another question...

Every monitor in the underground bunker suddenly went black.

A computerized voice echoed through the speakers.

"Security breach detected."

"Benjamin Hayes has entered the facility."

Then the emergency lights turned blood red.

May you like

And somewhere deep in the bunker...

A heavy steel door slammed shut.
