CHAPTER 5 – The Truth Was Never About the Money

Emily refused to panic.

Benjamin Hayes stood ten feet away, his pistol aimed directly at her heart.

"You've already won the fortune," he said calmly. "Don't make the mistake of chasing the truth."

Emily slowly raised her hands.

"What truth?"

Benjamin laughed.

"You still think Harrison Whitmore hid millions."

"He didn't."

"He hid names."

He pointed toward the archive boxes stacked inside the storage unit.

"Those files are worth far more than eighty-seven million dollars."

Emily glanced toward the shelves.

Every box represented a powerful person.

People who had built careers, fortunes, and reputations while hiding corruption behind perfect smiles.

Benjamin continued.

"Harrison collected evidence for twenty-five years."

"He planned to expose everyone."

"But before he could..."

"They silenced him."

Emily's blood ran cold.

"So he wasn't missing..."

Benjamin nodded.

"He was murdered."

The words echoed through the warehouse.

Emily finally understood.

The old couch had never been a treasure chest.

It had been a time capsule...

Waiting for the right person.

Suddenly—

A loud crash exploded behind them.

The warehouse lights went dark.

Someone had cut the power.

Benjamin spun around.

"Who's there?"

Silence.

Then...

A laser sight appeared on Benjamin's chest.

Another on his shoulder.

Another on his forehead.

Red dots danced across the darkness.

Benjamin's confidence vanished.

"What is this?"

A deep voice echoed through the warehouse.

"You should've burned the files when you had the chance."

Five armed figures dressed in black tactical gear stepped from the shadows.

None of them wore police badges.

None of them showed their faces.

Their leader spoke only one sentence.

"No witnesses."

Gunfire erupted.

Benjamin dove behind a crate.

Emily threw herself to the floor as bullets shattered boxes filled with decades of evidence.

Papers flew through the air like snow.

One bullet struck the ceiling sprinkler system.

Water poured down, soaking every document.

Ink began running across the pages.

The evidence was disappearing before Emily's eyes.

Thinking quickly, she grabbed the nearest archive box and sprinted toward a side exit.

A masked gunman chased after her.

She slammed the heavy metal door behind her and locked it.

Moments later—

A deafening explosion ripped through the warehouse.

The blast threw Emily onto the pavement.

She looked back in horror.

Storage Unit C-17 was engulfed in flames.

Benjamin...

The gunmen...

And nearly every piece of evidence...

Had vanished in the fire.

As firefighters arrived, detectives searched the ruins.

They found dozens of burned documents.

One melted handgun.

But no bodies.

Benjamin Hayes had disappeared.

The masked attackers were gone.

To the world, the case was over.

But as Emily sat in the ambulance wrapped in a blanket, her phone vibrated.

An unknown number had sent a single message.

Attached was a photo taken only seconds earlier.

It showed Emily running from the burning warehouse.

At the bottom were seven chilling words:

"This is only the beginning, Ms. Carter."

Emily looked around in terror.

Someone had been watching her the entire time.

And whoever they were...

They were still out there.
