CHAPTER 1: THE BITE THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

Emma Carter had worked in the Ashford mansion for only twelve days.
Twelve days of silence.
Twelve days of cleaning rooms larger than the apartment where she'd grown up.
Twelve days of pretending she wasn't constantly hungry.
The mansion overlooked the Pacific Ocean.
Crystal chandeliers sparkled from thirty-foot ceilings.
Imported marble reflected every light.
Every dinner ended with thousands of dollars' worth of untouched food thrown into black garbage bags.
But the staff wasn't allowed to eat any of it.
"House rules," the head housekeeper, Mrs. Dalton, had said.
"If anyone touches the family's food, they're fired immediately."
Emma nodded.
She needed this job.
Her six-year-old brother, Noah, was lying in a children's hospital waiting for another surgery.
Every dollar mattered.
For nearly two weeks she survived on instant noodles, crackers, and tap water.
She smiled while polishing silverware worth more than her yearly salary.
She vacuumed rooms that nobody entered.
She ironed sheets that had never been slept in.
And every night...
She smelled roasted steak...
Fresh lobster...
Warm garlic bread...
Chocolate soufflé...
Only to watch it all dumped into the trash.
By the thirteenth evening...
Her stomach finally won.
Everyone had gone upstairs.
The kitchen lights were dim.
The chefs had left.
Emma quietly untied one garbage bag.
Inside sat an untouched filet mignon.
Still warm.
Beside it...
Mashed potatoes.
Grilled asparagus.
Half a slice of chocolate cake.
Perfectly clean.
Perfectly edible.
Her hands trembled.
"I'm sorry," she whispered.
"I'm so sorry."
She carried the food into the corner of the kitchen.
She didn't dare sit at the table.
Instead...
She knelt on the cold tile floor.
Eating carefully.
Slowly.
Almost crying after every bite.
It was the first real meal she'd had in days.
Then...
A voice echoed through the silent kitchen.
"What are you eating?"
The fork slipped from her fingers.
Emma slowly turned around.
Standing in the doorway...
Still wearing a tailored black suit...
Was billionaire Ethan Ashford himself.
The owner of the mansion.
The man every employee feared.
Mrs. Dalton gasped from behind him.
"Oh my God..."
The entire kitchen froze.
Emma immediately lowered her head.
"I'm sorry, sir."
"I'll leave."
"I know I'm fired."
But Ethan didn't answer.
Instead...
He looked down at the food.
Then...
He asked one quiet question.
"Why are you eating on the floor instead of sitting at the table?"
No one understood why he asked that.
Least of all Emma.
She whispered without looking up.
"Because people like me don't belong at your table."
The silence afterward felt louder than thunder.
Mrs. Dalton smiled.
She expected Emma to be thrown out immediately.
Instead...
Ethan slowly loosened his tie.
Pulled out a chair.
Placed it beside Emma.
And quietly said...
"Sit."
Emma stared at him.
"I..."
"I said..."
"Sit."
Mrs. Dalton's face turned pale.
Because Ethan Ashford had never invited a servant to sit beside him.
Not once.
May you like
Not in fifteen years.
But what happened next would shake the entire Ashford family forever...
