CHAPTER 9: THE HIDDEN FORTUNE

No one understood what Mrs. Pierce meant.

"What money?"

She refused to answer.

Days later...

Investigators searched every vault.

Every office.

Every bank account.

Nothing.

Nearly one billion dollars had disappeared decades earlier.

Emma remembered something.

The old journal.

Richard had often mentioned one place.

"The greenhouse."

It had been abandoned for years.

Emma and Ethan searched it together.

Beneath a cracked stone fountain...

They found an old steel box.

Inside were dozens of original company certificates.

Bearer bonds.

Rare diamonds.

And one handwritten letter.

Richard had hidden the fortune himself.

Not to protect it from strangers.

But from his own wife.

He wrote:

"If my children ever read this...
Wealth means nothing if it destroys your family.
Use it to help people—not to become people like us."

Emma closed her eyes.

"We're not keeping this."

Ethan smiled.

"I was hoping you'd say that."

Together they announced the creation of the Ashford Hope Foundation.

Children's hospitals.

Food programs.

Scholarships.

Emergency housing.

Everything Richard wished he had done while alive.

The world praised the Ashford family.

But someone else was watching.

A man sitting alone inside a prison cell.

He stared at Emma's face on the television.

Then quietly whispered...

May you like

"I know who she really is."

End of Chapter 9.
