CHAPTER 10: THE MAN FROM THE PAST

The prison visitor room was silent.

The inmate requested only one person.

Emma.

Against Ethan's advice...

She agreed.

The prisoner was in his seventies.

Gray hair.

Weathered hands.

Kind eyes.

He stood slowly.

"You don't remember me."

Emma shook her head.

"No."

He smiled sadly.

"You were only four."

He reached into his prison-issued Bible and removed a tiny, faded photograph.

It showed Emma.

Noah.

Their mother.

And a young man standing beside them.

Emma gasped.

"My father..."

The old man nodded.

"I was his best friend."

"My name is Samuel."

"He died protecting your family."

Emma's voice trembled.

"I was told he abandoned us."

Samuel shook his head.

"No."

"He stayed behind to stop the men chasing your mother."

Emma couldn't speak.

Samuel looked down.

"I failed to save them."

"I spent twenty years in prison after taking the blame for something I didn't do."

Emma reached across the table and took his hand.

"You were protecting my parents."

Samuel smiled through tears.

"I promised your father I'd tell you the truth if I ever got out."

Weeks later...

Samuel's conviction was overturned after new evidence proved his innocence.

He walked free.

Emma was waiting outside the prison gates.

Not with lawyers.

Not with reporters.

But with Noah.

The little boy ran forward and hugged the old man.

Samuel broke down crying.

"I don't deserve this."

Emma smiled.

"My mother wrote that revenge wasn't what mattered."

She looked toward the sunrise.

"She wanted us to choose love."

Samuel nodded.

"And today..."

May you like

"We finally did."
