CHAPTER 2: THE SECRET IN HER POCKET

Emma sat at the kitchen table with shaking hands.

Ethan Ashford watched her quietly.

Not like a billionaire judging a maid.

Like a man seeing something he had forgotten how to feel.

Mrs. Dalton rushed forward.

“Mr. Ashford, she broke the rules. Staff are not allowed to touch leftover food.”

Ethan did not look at her.

“Then change the rule.”

The kitchen went dead silent.

Emma looked up.

“What?”

Ethan’s voice was cold.

“No food leaves this kitchen in trash bags while people in this house are hungry.”

Mrs. Dalton’s mouth opened, then closed.

Emma whispered, “Sir, please don’t do this because of me. I can leave.”

Ethan leaned closer.

“Why are you hungry?”

Emma pressed her lips together.

She had promised herself never to cry in rich people’s houses.

But that night, the truth slipped out.

“My little brother is sick. He needs surgery. I send almost everything I make to the hospital.”

Ethan’s expression changed.

“What hospital?”

Emma hesitated.

Then Mrs. Dalton snapped, “She’s probably lying. Girls like her always have a sob story.”

Emma stood quickly.

“I’m not lying.”

As she reached for her apron, a folded paper fell from her pocket.

It landed at Ethan’s feet.

He picked it up.

A hospital bill.

Then another paper slipped out.

A photograph.

A little boy in a hospital bed, smiling weakly with a toy dinosaur in his arms.

On the back, in childish handwriting, it said:

For Emma. Don’t be hungry because of me.

Ethan’s hand tightened around the photo.

For the first time, his voice broke.

“What is his name?”

“Noah,” Emma whispered.

Ethan stared at the picture like it had opened an old wound.

Then he turned to Mrs. Dalton.

“Call my driver.”

Mrs. Dalton froze.

“Sir?”

“We’re going to the hospital.”

Emma stepped back.

“No. Please. I didn’t ask for charity.”

Ethan looked at her.

“This is not charity.”

His eyes darkened.

“This is a debt I should have paid years ago.”

Emma didn’t understand.

But Mrs. Dalton did.

And the fear on her face told Emma one thing clearly:

May you like

The hospital bill was not the real secret.
