CHAPTER 8: THE TRUTH ABOUT LILLIAN

Emma couldn't breathe.

"What did you say?"

Mrs. Pierce smiled coldly.

"I said..."

"Your mother was never supposed to survive."

Ethan lunged toward her.

"You murdered my sister?"

Mrs. Pierce didn't answer.

Instead she pulled out an old newspaper clipping.

The article described Lillian's fatal car accident.

"It wasn't an accident," she whispered.

"It was supposed to look like one."

The police reopened the investigation immediately.

Former employees were questioned.

Old security records were recovered.

Then an elderly chauffeur named Walter came forward.

For twenty-two years...

He had carried a secret.

"I drove Miss Lillian that day."

Everyone stared.

Walter lowered his head.

"The brakes had already been cut."

Emma burst into tears.

Walter continued.

"She knew."

"What?"

Walter nodded.

"She realized someone wanted her dead."

"So she pushed her children out of the car seconds before it crashed."

Emma collapsed into Ethan's arms.

"My mother..."

Walter cried for the first time in decades.

"She saved both of you."

Silence filled the mansion.

Until a detective walked in holding handcuffs.

He looked directly at Mrs. Pierce.

"We're placing you under arrest."

She smiled one last time.

"You think this is over?"

Then she whispered five terrifying words.

May you like

"You never found the money."

End of Chapter 8.
