CHAPTER 6 – “The Truth Eleanor Buried for 26 Years”

The photograph hit the marble floor.
Emily slowly bent down to pick it up.
Her hands wouldn't stop shaking.
The young Eleanor in the picture looked nothing like the dignified woman standing before her now.
She was smiling...
Holding a newborn baby wrapped in a pink blanket.
On the back of the photograph, someone had written five words in faded ink:
"Our daughter. July 18."
Emily's heartbeat thundered in her ears.
"Our... daughter?"
She looked from the photograph to Eleanor.
"What does this mean?"
Eleanor's face turned pale.
For the first time in decades...
She looked afraid.
Richard Whitmore smiled.
"Go on, Mother."
"Tell her."
"Tell everyone the truth you've hidden for twenty-six years."
The room was frozen.
Even Victoria stopped crying.
Everyone waited.
Eleanor slowly closed her eyes.
"When Jonathan was twenty-four..."
"He fell in love with a woman our family refused to accept."
Emily whispered,
"My mother..."
Eleanor nodded.
"They wanted Jonathan to marry into another billionaire family."
"But he chose love instead."
Richard laughed bitterly.
"And Father hated him for it."
Eleanor continued.
"When Emily was born..."
"Your mother became seriously ill."
"She died only a few weeks later."
Emily felt tears burning her eyes.
"I never even knew her..."
Eleanor reached for Emily's hand.
"Before your mother died..."
"She begged me to protect you."
Emily squeezed her hand.
"So why did I grow up in poverty?"
"Why did you abandon me?"
Eleanor couldn't answer.
Richard answered for her.
"Because she believed I would kill you."
The room exploded with gasps.
Richard didn't even try to deny it.
"I wanted control of Whitmore Group."
"Jonathan stood in my way."
"So did his daughter."
Emily stared at him in horror.
"You tried to kill a baby?"
Richard smiled without emotion.
"I planned to."
"But Mother made a deal."
Everyone turned toward Eleanor.
She whispered through tears,
"I begged him to spare your life."
"I agreed to let everyone believe you were dead..."
"...if he promised never to hurt you."
Emily stepped backward.
"So..."
"You sacrificed me."
Eleanor began crying.
"I thought growing up poor was better than growing up dead."
Emily couldn't breathe.
Everything she believed about her life...
Everything...
Had been built on one heartbreaking decision.
Richard slowly applauded.
"A touching story."
"But it's still incomplete."
He reached into his briefcase and removed a sealed legal document.
"The real inheritance."
He placed it on the table.
"The document Jonathan signed before disappearing."
Eleanor's expression changed instantly.
"No..."
Richard smiled.
"Oh yes."
He opened the file.
"If Jonathan ever returned..."
"...every member of the Whitmore family would lose their inheritance."
The room erupted in panic.
Ethan looked stunned.
"My father knew this all along?"
Richard nodded calmly.
"Of course."
"That's why Jonathan..."
He leaned toward Emily.
"...could never be allowed to come home."
Just then...
A phone on the investigator's desk rang.
Everyone jumped.
The investigator answered.
His face drained of color.
"What?"
He put the call on speaker.
A nervous voice echoed through the silent mansion.
"We've located Jonathan Whitmore."
Emily stopped breathing.
"He's alive?"
The officer answered,
"Yes..."
A pause.
"But there's one problem."
"He escaped the private medical facility where he'd been held for twenty-six years..."
"...and security footage shows he's already on his way to the Whitmore estate."
Richard's confident smile vanished.
For the first time in decades...
The man who controlled everything...
Looked terrified.
May you like
Because the one person who knew every secret...
Was finally coming home.
