Chapter 3: The Woman Behind the Fire

Emily stood outside the mansion gates, her hands shaking as rain poured over her face.
Seventeen years ago, this place had burned in her nightmares.
Now it stood perfectly restored, glowing with golden lights like nothing evil had ever happened there.
Her uncle, Richard, stepped beside her.
"Your adoptive mother, Margaret, was never your savior," he said quietly. "She was your father's business partner."
Emily's heart tightened.
"She raised me."
Richard looked at her with pain in his eyes.
"No. She hid you."
Inside the mansion, Margaret Blackwood sat at the head of the dining table, wearing pearls, silk, and the calm smile of a woman who believed she had won.
But when Emily walked in, Margaret's fork slipped from her hand.
The room went silent.
Margaret whispered, "You shouldn't be here."
Emily stepped forward.
"Why?"
Margaret's face changed.
The sweet motherly mask disappeared.
"You were supposed to die with them."
Emily felt the words slice through her chest.
All the bedtime stories, all the fake hugs, all the years of calling this woman Mom...
Had been built on blood.
Margaret stood slowly.
"Your father was weak. He wanted to donate half the company to charity. I built that empire with him, and he was going to throw it away."
Emily's eyes filled with tears.
"So you killed them?"
Margaret smiled coldly.
"No, darling. I did worse."
She opened a drawer and placed a small silver locket on the table.
Inside was a photo of Emily as a child.
"Your mother begged me to save you."
Emily couldn't breathe.
Margaret leaned closer and whispered,
"So I did. I saved you... and erased you."
Then the mansion lights suddenly went out.
A hidden voice echoed from the speakers.
"Confession recorded."
Margaret's smile vanished.
Emily turned around.
Mr. Harrison stepped from the shadows, holding a recorder in his trembling hand.
And behind him stood two police officers.
