Chapter 8: The Final Name

The countdown flashed across every screen.
00:59
00:58
00:57
Panic swept through the mansion.
Victor Ashford grabbed the laptop.
"Find that hacker!"
Captain Reeves barked orders into his radio.
"Seal every exit! Nobody leaves!"
But nobody noticed Emily.
She quietly unfolded the tiny piece of paper Mr. Harrison had slipped into her hand.
It wasn't just the title of her mother's favorite song.
Written underneath, in tiny handwriting, were six words.
"Trust the one who betrayed you."
Emily frowned.
Betrayed her?
Who?
Suddenly, she remembered Margaret's dying words.
"I stole your childhood... but I won't let them steal your future."
Margaret hadn't been trying to protect Victor.
She had been protecting Emily.
Emily ran toward the library one last time.
Behind Margaret's favorite bookshelf, she discovered a hidden compartment.
Inside sat an old cassette recorder.
She pressed PLAY.
Her mother's voice filled the room.
"Emily... if you're hearing this, then I couldn't save myself. But I can still save you."
Tears rolled down Emily's cheeks.
"Margaret wasn't my enemy."
"She pretended to betray us because she learned someone inside the police had ordered our murders."
"She agreed to raise you in secret... knowing you would hate her one day."
Emily collapsed to her knees.
Everything she believed about Margaret...
Everything she hated...
Had been another sacrifice.
The recording continued.
"The real mastermind isn't Victor."
"He works for someone far more powerful."
Suddenly, every screen in the mansion turned black.
The countdown stopped.
A single photograph appeared.
It showed a group of smiling men standing together twenty years earlier.
Politicians.
Judges.
Business leaders.
Police chiefs.
And one little girl sitting on her father's shoulders.
Emily.
The hooded hacker spoke again.
"Look carefully."
Emily zoomed in on the old photograph.
Hidden in the back row stood one man whose face no one had noticed before.
He wasn't wearing a suit.
He wasn't wearing a police uniform.
He wore a simple black robe.
The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
Victor whispered in terror,
"No..."
Captain Reeves stepped backward.
"Impossible..."
The hacker laughed.
"You spent seventeen years protecting him."
"You killed for him."
"You lied for him."
"But he has already abandoned all of you."
At that exact moment...
Every phone inside the mansion vibrated simultaneously.
Victor checked his screen.
His bank accounts...
Frozen.
Captain Reeves checked his.
Arrest warrant.
Every officer around him received the same notification.
Federal agents had surrounded the estate.
Helicopters thundered overhead.
Floodlights illuminated the mansion from every direction.
A booming voice echoed through loudspeakers.
"Federal Task Force!"
"This property is surrounded!"
"No one is leaving!"
Victor looked at Emily with desperate eyes.
For the first time in his life...
The billionaire who had manipulated governments...
Was afraid.
Emily slowly picked up the encrypted drive.
She looked at Victor.
Then at Captain Reeves.
Finally, she smiled through her tears.
"You spent seventeen years trying to erase my family."
"But tonight..."
"The whole world will finally learn your names."
Outside, the front gates exploded open as dozens of armored federal vehicles stormed the mansion.
Inside, Victor reached into his jacket...
Not for a gun.
For a passport.
Because he had only one thought left.
May you like
Run.
THE END... OR IS IT?
